curiouswombat: (Shiny!)
Congratulations to everyone who is mentioned in the results for The Tree and Flower Awards. I have shiny things! Rather an embarrassment of shiny things. A really big thank you not just to those who nominated and voted for my stories, but to everyone who participated in any way - without people to run them, to nominate stories, to read and vote, awards schemes just cease to exist.

For those of you haven't heard of them, they are 'by nomination and vote' annual awards for stories posted at Many Paths to Tread which is a small, well run, Tolkien specific site - and the winners lists(Posted on MPtT's sister LJ community) make a very, very, good reading list.

I post mainly my drabble sets there, and am really pleased that many of them have done so very well against some excellent, and often much longer, stories.

Shiny things... )

Some pretties... and some words to go with them.

This was my recognition that I took part in a comment challenge -

2013 Anniversary Comment Challenge Banner photo 2013CommentChallengebanner.jpg

Now it really wasn't hard to actually comment as I read some good, well written, fics; and it was a real pleasure, also, to receive comments. So I would urge you to take the time, when reading, to say you enjoy the story - even if that is all you say. Wondering about a source of good reading to comment on? Then you could do a great deal worse than to look at the nominees for these -

2013 Tree and Flower Awards

Many Paths to Tread is a smallish (but growing) Tolkien archive, where I mainly archive my drabble sets, and so I am really pleased to say that I received nominations in

Favorite story featuring Men for First Spring.

A year in the Walled Garden and Family Ties were nominated in the actual drabble or drabble series category.

Then Cautionary Tales for Little Hobbits was nominated in Favorite Humour Story, and in Favorite characterization of Gandalf, Learning Process was nominated.

Finally The Making of an Heirloom was nominated in Favorite characterization of Legolas.

Links to the stories, and the voting polls, can be found HERE - go and enjoy some very good reading.

Congratulations to all the people on my Friends List who have won awards at the Tree and Flower Awards.

So well done to Clodia Metelli, Ellyn, Erulisse, Himring, Keiliss, Lady Branwyn, Larner, Levade, Linda Hoyland, Ningloreth, Oshun, Shirebound, and Virtuella. (I hope I didn't miss anyone - if so, apologies!)

And for me...

First Places:
Dust
Éomer's Guide to Contemporary Bardic Works
Edoras to Ithilien…in Twelve Moves
The Long Road Home

Second Places:
A Is For Apple
By Pastures Green

Third Places:
Winds of Change
The Long Road Home
Invocation Of Memory

I will go and collect the banners at the weekend and post them onto the stories.  Or, thinking about my coming weekend... maybe at the beginning of next week!

And - hmm - it's just occurred to me that The Long Road Home was in two different classes at the same time!

The Tree and Flower Awards voting closes in a few days. The organisers worked hard to get these organised, to celebrate the anniversary of the Many Paths to Tread Archive; and so far only 23 people have voted.

So I would ask you to go to THIS POST and follow the links to the individual polls - you don't have to vote in every poll, you don't have to vote in each category of any poll (so I chose not to vote in some of the categories where I have stories competing) - but if you spot a favourite story or two, you could just vote for them. The polls will close on September 22nd - let's see if we can get some more participants before then!

Tree and Flower Awards Nominee

So - first thing - a big thank you to everyone who nominated any of my stories from Many Paths to Tread for their anniversary awards.

There have been some excellent entries - they can all be found at Many Paths, of course, and are all listed in the polls, links to which can be found here.

Second thing - I have written another 'Small Return' - but still take heed of Kazzy Cee's advice never to post stories with other things - so I will post it separately!

This is a post in particular for fellow members of the Tolkienrim...

Please believe me when I tell you that the way in which the MEFAs imploded was generally polite, courteous, and almost entirely, although not completely, sane.

The way in which the two new awards sites are being developed, especially the ToMEs where I am most involved, is thoughtful, sensible, and again, almost totally polite and friendly.

HONESTLY!

Because in the Buffy Fandom at the moment it seems there are actually death-threats over a relationship between two characters... Yes - actual death-threats.

Although, on the plus side, they do have an all-penguin AU and an all-butterfly one is breaking out of its chrysalis even as I type...

The Middle Earth Fanfic Awards (MEFAs) results are out. These are the Oscars of the Tolkien Fandom - chosen by peer review - and so I am very, very proud of my results!

Pretty Banners - mostly by Ellyn;

Yes - A Powerful Absence got a First! It was almost painful to write - a bit like giving birth at times - and so I am very proud of that.

Also a First for the second set of drabbles about Eldarion and his governess - Return of the Governess -

A Third for The Fosterling - and what a perfect banner for it!

Photobucket

And an Honourable Mention for I must Go Down to the Sea Again - with yet another perfect banner made for me by Ellyn.

This year there were also special awards (Smaug's Treasures) for the stories that came in the top 1/3 overall, by number and length of review. This is because some classes will be very popular and the fifth or sixth entry will have got more points than the second or third from a different class. Three of the above were also given that award -

I am really, really happy - and want to say A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who took time to review any of my stories, and to everyone who is involved with he organisation - everything runs so well - and if you ever have an hour or two to spare, and want to read Tolkien related fanfic - then a visit to the MEFA Archive is a very good place to browse.

Congratulations, too, to all my friends who got wins, placings, mentions and Treasure - all well earned, and very one worth reading!
curiouswombat: (MEFA nominee)
It finally occurred to me today that perhaps I had missed a post, possibly when away from home in May or June, telling me where to pick up the banners for my stories that are nominated in this year's Middle Earth Fanfic Awards... And so I went to the FAQs and discovered there is actually a whole new LJ Comm full of banners where I ould have picked them up ages ago...

So, now I have my shiny things! Apologies to some of the original artists for adding titles myself.

Click for some beautiful artwork )

I have also been given some lovely artwork for some of my stories by [livejournal.com profile] wildecate which I fully intend to put not only here, but also with the relevant stories. And I really must work out how to put my own header on my journal as one, at least, would be wonderful for that.
curiouswombat: (Shiny!)
The results for the Middle Earth Fanfic Awards are now decided. For those of you who have no knowledge of the MEFAs, winners are decided by the number and length of reviews written per story over a period of about six months - so real peer review!

Look - pretty, shiny, shiny, things! )

Many congratulations to all my friends who also won pretty, shiny things in the MEFAs - well done to all!
curiouswombat: (Shiny!)
This is a boast-post. Sorry....

I am always rather pleased to get nominations for my stories in any awards.

As I write mainly Lord of the Rings and Cross-over fic these days I am especially thrilled with my nominations at the Middle Earth Fanfic Awards - the MEFAs, and the Crossing Over Awards for stories at Twisting the Hellmouth.

The MEFAs are decided by the amount of reviews written for each story by MEFA members, over a period of about six months - and I was thrilled to get a win and a place last year for two of my drabbles.

The COAs are decided by votes cast by the members of TtH - one of the biggest fandom sites on the net - the last time they were held is over 2 years ago, and Return of The Key won it's class.

So, both major awards with a broad base of fans deciding on the outcomes. You can imagine, then, how happy I am to have all the noms that I have in both this year - to see all my pretty, shiny nomination graphics click here )

Um - yes, I am competing against myself in one category... COA stalwarts like S2C and [livejournal.com profile] ffutures would point out to me that I should have turned one of those nominations down...

Anyway - I am very proud of myself! And I would urge anyone who is able to vote in the COAs to go and do so soon - the first round finishes soon, and there are some good stories nominated. (And, to be honest, some dross, too...)

Those of my friends who are involved in the MEFAs have a couple of months still to go there and read - and it is also a wonderful source of good reading for those who haven't wanted to join the group (so can't leave counted reviews).

OK - end of blowing own trumpet...

I Won!

I am embarrassingly chuffed! I won 'Best Lord of the Rings Crossover' at the Crossing Over Awards over at Twisting the Hellmouth.

Photobucket

I am embarrassed because [livejournal.com profile] speakr2customrs, who I think is a better writer than me by quite a way and who betas my stories, only got second places and honourable mentions...

Major congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] ffutures who won THREE categories.

Actually the very best thing about Return of The Key being at TtH is that so far it has had an average of 1,278 readers per chapter! That just makes me feel really happy!
curiouswombat: (Shiny!)
I am a happy wombat.

I have received three nominations at the Crossing Over Awards at Twisting the Hellmouth. Compared with some people, like [livejournal.com profile] speakr2customrs and [livejournal.com profile] ffutures, three is not an enormous amount - but it is for me! All are for Return of The Key.

If you want to see my shiny nominations click here )

Also - yesterday we held a three hour post-Christmas party for 14 children aged 2 - 15 at Church. My niece the plumber bravely organised most of the games, we fed the children on sausages, pizza, chicken nuggets, cake, jelly and squirty cream - all the really healthy stuff! However all the children and helpers survived - I think I probably should have a shiny for that, rather than for writing - which is much less like hard work! :~)

I am feeling rather pleased as Ten Years After came second in the [livejournal.com profile] good__evil's 'Good Dawn' category - the pretty is under the cut, and when he has his next nights off I will ask the husband to put it onto the story on the Wombatzone. (I can't do it myself because I don't have a password to the site! As it is a small corner of his.)

Pretty, pretty award )

In other news - Mother in Law has now moved on to the next leg of her trip - revisiting old haunts from her youth in Newcastle upon Tyne, although sadly without her sister, which was the original plan. And finally - I have been teaching all day today, the first day of a two day course, and something happened to me that has never happened before.

For those of you who don't know my profession, I am a Clinical Nurse Specialist - my specialism is Continence, and so this is what I teach.
Cut for length, and maybe a bit TMI )

First the pimping. If you want to read a wonderfully crafted story, beautifully written then you could do no better than to read "Just Another Irish Rose" by [livejournal.com profile] julia_here which is now completed. It is set in the 1860s, and stars Angelus and Drusilla on an ocean trip between Dublin and New York. It is 78 Chapters long, Julia has posted them regularly since February and I have eagerly awaited every one. I can thoroughly recommend this - and you can find Chapter One here -
http://www.livejournal.com/users/julia_here/19522.html

Other Chapters are in Julia's memories.

And my Ten Years After got the runner up spot in it's class at The Lie to Me Awards!

curiouswombat: (Ten Years After1 flame81)
A long time ago - well more than eighteen years ago, I remember finding out I was pregnant. The husband was really happy about it (well if not he gave a good impression!), but I was a bit apprehensive about telling my sister, and I was relieved when my mother offered to let her know for me. Why? Because although younger than me, she had been married for over five years, and trying for a baby for two or three of them, whereas we'd been married just over a year, and this pregnancy was unplanned, we had meant to wait until we'd finalised the sale of my old flat, sold the one we were living in and bought somewhere more suitable for a baby, but D-d didn't want to wait and lo and behold, here I was pregnant.

My Mother must have rung my sister quickly, because sister rang me within a few minutes, really happy to hear the news - and full of her own news, because she had only told Mum an hour or less before that she was pregnant herself! Suddenly I could be really excited, because my sister wouldn't feel that I had somehow beaten her to something without even trying!

Why has this come to my mind tonight? Because I won a pretty for Ten Years After!!

And can you imagine how awful I would have felt, if S2C hadn't just won at the RDAs? If I had won for my one story, without really trying, when he had been writing for so long? Although it was even more like sister and I - S2C also won at the Loves Bitch Awards -so I can Snoopy Dance, and go Squeeeeee as much as I like! And I am truly chuffed. Stunned as well, to have won something, and must say a big thank you to whoever nominated me, and to the Awards organisers. To look at my pretties (Yay MY pretties!!)

And congrats to [livejournal.com profile] bogwitch who got THREE pretties!! And to [livejournal.com profile] sockmonkeyhere who got a pretty for Canis Familiar, and [livejournal.com profile] myfeetshowit who I noticed there under her other name, and to all the other winners - go check out at
