Starting with the second part of my subject line, [livejournal.com profile] gillo posted a link to þā Engliscan Wikipǣdie!

This is not a Wiki page about Old English - it is Wikipedia written in Old English/Anglo Saxon. Anyone interested in languages will love it - as will any of my Tolkienrim friends with an interest in the Rohirrim.

Secondly - I have continued with the 'new recipe a month' project. This is another one from all those Good Food magazines D-d treated me to last year. Nothing very complicated, but certainly tasty and worth repeating, this month I made bacon & ricotta oven-baked frittata.

Very easy to make, clear instructions, and it came out just as it should. Look.... )

My back is a lot better now, too. I am still treating it with a lot of care though.

As some of you might know, the guys from Jorvik declared that 'the ragnar will be röking on Saturday' when it will be Ragnarök (otherwise known as the Twilight of the Gods).

In honour of the end of the world as we know it [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni suggested If you feel like noodling at a Apocalyptic ficlet, drabble, poem, quick sketch or fanmix or something, shall we? Any fandom welcome, or none.

One of the prompts was
Prompt: any fandom, any character/pairing, the song of the twilight of the gods

I should be getting on with my B2ME story - but I was easily distracted...

Tolkien, Manwë, the song of the twilight of the gods. )

I thought some of my friends might find this article in The Guardian interesting.

A Bristol University expert on past climate change has traced some of Tolkien's detailed maps, and then effectively "scanned" that into the university's computer to determine the weather patterns of Middle Earth.

He has come up with a number of interesting observations - for example

• Much of Middle Earth would have been covered in dense forest if the landscape had not been altered by dragons, orcs, wizards etc.

And that the climate around Mount Doom is very like that of Los Angeles...

Remember back on October 4th I said that D-d's birthday gift to her Dad had not arrived for his birthday although she had ordered it about 8 days before?

Well when it hadn't arrived by almost a week later she contacted the supplier in York who then e-mailed her an apology; their carrier had taken it as usually and then, 7 days later, returned it as they didn't deliver to 'the highlands and islands'.

So they then sent it by Parcel2Go, and gave her the tracking number. On 17th of October she asked me had it arrived, as the tracking info showed it being delivered... to an address in York. But not the supplier's address. At this stage, S2C knew the supplier was York Armouries and so that it was likely to be a replica weapon - and decided it was probably a boomerang!

Finally, on Wednesday, which was October 23rd of course, it was delivered about 4.30pm. So it took about 26 or 27 days to travel the 120 or so miles between York and our house.

And what was it?

Today is Tolkien Day. The Guardian has a quiz that you might want to try HERE.

S2C got 10/10. I got 9/10 from not actually reading properly... be warned!

I was looking for something totally different when I found a picture of a town called Ostuni, in Italy.

And lo! It is Minas Tirith.

Ostuni_in_Puglia-e aka Minas Tirith

And here is a quiet snicket within Minas Tirith Ostuni;

Minas Tirith stair

How beautiful is that? I can imagine Dawn and her assailants from Return of The Key there.

But I think I'm going to have to write something else set in MT now!

Sorry it's been a few days longer than I had planned - but it is also a little longer... :)

So - this is the chapter in which our heroine finally gets to put her request to the Valar.

This is a short set of drabbles written over the past few weeks for [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly.

They could be set in the future of the Retunverse - but they don't have to be. They are certainly set after Legolas and Gimli sailed West.

Thing The First - almost all my friends in the UK are more or less under snow. All day Friday, and all day today, it has snowed here. And this is all we have to show for it....

slightly snowy

A dusting on the higher ground. Otherwise it simply disappeared as it landed. I am quite envious of everyone who has 6 inches and more!

Thing The Second - new friend [livejournal.com profile] gatty mentioned something I had not read - probably because it was written a while before I migrated from the Buffyverse over to the Tolkien fandom. It is Bagenders - a series in which "The Fellowship have been made immortal and are living together in the house-share from Hell." The writers happily acknowledge that it owes quite a bit to Father Ted & The Young Ones, with the odd shout out to Terry Pratchett, Julian and Sandy from 'Round the Horne', 'Blackadder Goes Forth', Blue Peter - and lots of other things. So British friends who enjoyed Father Ted and/or The Young Ones you really should go and read!

Having read LotR, or seen the films, is really all the Tolkien knowledge you really need.

And as for me - I am going to dive back in... I may be some time.

Thing The Third - Tolkien Friends - do you remember [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath's Royal Houses of the Noldor made simple with chibi figures? Well he has begun to tell us The History of Middle Earth - starting In The Beginning - and has also, now, helped us figure out The Valaquenta - go, go and look - the history of Middle Earth has never looked cuter. And if you look in the comments to that post you will see that he and I have our own thoughts on why Nienna lives where she does, and cries so much...

Firstly an observation - it is clear, when you look at my journal, that I was off work for the first week of this year - I posted every day. And then I went back to work...

It occurred to me that I posted a single drabble here at Halloween, as it was most certainly seasonal - Adding Insult to Injury - but it was actually the first one of a set.

So now I have got around to posting the whole set. They feature Tindómë in conversation with the sons of Elrond...

I have included that first one as well - Here they are... )

I have one of those programmes about Alaskan airlines on TV - sort of as background as I do something else - and I heard them talk about being in Gimli, Manitoba.

I thought I must have misheard - but no - both S2C and I looked it up and Yay! There really is a place called Gimli in Manitoba.
