The challenges at [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly recently were based on the ingredients for mulled wine.

This cried out to me for Recipe Fic. And so each of the seven drabbles features a particular dish - and is followed by the recipe for the dish.

The main character is simply described as an un-named young elf in a kitchen - those who have read the Returnverse might like to know that it is Tharhîwon. If you remember who he is you will understand his thoughts from the beginning - but if you don't, I will explain a little more at the end.

So - Seven Drabbles and Seven Recipes... )

Enjoy the drabbles - and try the recipes!

These are a short set of drabbles, written for the Petrology challenges at [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly. They feature the Fellowship of The Ring, some a little more than others.

The Lay of the Land

[livejournal.com profile] kortirion suggested I might want to add a couple more - but I think these will be it.

Some pretties... and some words to go with them.

This was my recognition that I took part in a comment challenge -

2013 Anniversary Comment Challenge Banner photo 2013CommentChallengebanner.jpg

Now it really wasn't hard to actually comment as I read some good, well written, fics; and it was a real pleasure, also, to receive comments. So I would urge you to take the time, when reading, to say you enjoy the story - even if that is all you say. Wondering about a source of good reading to comment on? Then you could do a great deal worse than to look at the nominees for these -

2013 Tree and Flower Awards

Many Paths to Tread is a smallish (but growing) Tolkien archive, where I mainly archive my drabble sets, and so I am really pleased to say that I received nominations in

Favorite story featuring Men for First Spring.

A year in the Walled Garden and Family Ties were nominated in the actual drabble or drabble series category.

Then Cautionary Tales for Little Hobbits was nominated in Favorite Humour Story, and in Favorite characterization of Gandalf, Learning Process was nominated.

Finally The Making of an Heirloom was nominated in Favorite characterization of Legolas.

Links to the stories, and the voting polls, can be found HERE - go and enjoy some very good reading.

These drabbles were written for 'communication' prompts at [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly, and are actually set in the Returnverse, before the period covered by those stories.

I like to think she was happy there.
curiouswombat: (Gandalf)
The challenges at [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly recently have been a set of ailments.

I wrote the whole challenge with Gandalf as my central character...

Learning Process )
curiouswombat: (curious Legolas)
This is a short set of drabbles written over the past few weeks for [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly.

They could be set in the future of the Retunverse - but they don't have to be. They are certainly set after Legolas and Gimli sailed West.

Firstly an observation - it is clear, when you look at my journal, that I was off work for the first week of this year - I posted every day. And then I went back to work...

It occurred to me that I posted a single drabble here at Halloween, as it was most certainly seasonal - Adding Insult to Injury - but it was actually the first one of a set.

So now I have got around to posting the whole set. They feature Tindómë in conversation with the sons of Elrond...

I have included that first one as well - Here they are... )
curiouswombat: (Hop tu Naa)
I don't often post my drabbles here until there is a whole set - but in view of the date I thought I would post the one I did for last week's prompt.

Last year [livejournal.com profile] azalaisdep and I played a form of drabble tennis to come up with A series of Unfortunate Medical Mishaps. For this current challenge I have returned to the same theme. The sons of Elrond are entertaining a friend by recounting to her some of the stories of injuries sustained during 'the bad times'.

Adding Insult to Injury )

Sadly it is a wet windy night here, and we have had not one small person singing for treats. But I have a plan for the unused chocolate - well some of it, anyway!
curiouswombat: (flowers)
I have drabbled.

This is a set where the theme was times of year - and we began them quite soon after I visited the walled garden at Baddesley Clinton with [livejournal.com profile] gillo - which is where the inspiration came from.

So;eight true drabbles, featuring Faramir, Éowyn, but starring the walled garden. Rated G. Oh - and with illustrations!

A Year in the Walled Garden )
curiouswombat: (Rohan)
I'm not sure if anyone but me remembers the drabbles I wrote about young Osred, aged about 12 or 13, trying to be the man of the family after his father and grandfather were killed in the Ring War?

They are here if you would like to be reminded.

Those covered the first post-war winter in Rohan - and now I have written more, covering their first spring.

The prompts were farming related, and the stories are under here )
curiouswombat: (Sailing)
I have drabbled.

These were written for the most recent challenges at Tolkien Weekly where the theme was 'Writing'.

The set looks at Celebrían's relationship with her father, through the lens of her journey to, and sojourn in, Valinor.

The Long Road Home )

Title is from the Runrig song Headlights.

Final scene is courtesy of a well-remembered scene from a BBC dramatisation - once it was stuck in my head I couldn't get rid of it!

Oh - and Galathil appears in the genealogies - I didn't even have to invent him.
curiouswombat: (Chaos and Panic)
This is a set of drabbles written for Tolkien Weekly.

They are all cautionary tales told to little hobbits during the latter half of the sixteen century by Shire reckoning. (This would be the mid to late second century of the Fourth Age by the reckoning of the men of Gondor.) Or, in other words, almost 200 years after the events in Lord of the Rings. The Shire has had little contact with the outside world for some time. There is a tiny grain of Tolkien-truth in the pearl that is each of them - except one! I'll leave you to guess which one...

Cautionary Tales-1

curiouswombat: (Eldarion)
I had forgotten to post the set of drabbles I wrote a month or two ago - once more featuring Eldarion and his governess, Firiel, and with a guest appearance by The Players...

So - more lessons from Eldarion's School-room; under this cut )
curiouswombat: (Boromir)
The most recent prompts at [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly were related to light. As sometimes happens a chance remark, between myself and [livejournal.com profile] azalaisdep, set me off on my path...but I will only explain what it was at the end!

So, beneath the cut are a set of nine true drabbles with the central theme of Boromir in Rivendell... )
curiouswombat: (Sailing)
A set of drabbles written for the 'facial expressions' prompts at Tolkien Weekly. They are centred on Elrond as he sailed West at the end of the Third Age - hoping to see his wife again...

When The Boat Comes In )

Those of you who saw them over at Tolkien Weekly might have noticed that I swapped the order of a couple of them around. I think it works better...
curiouswombat: (Seven stars and one white tree...)
This is a set of drabbles written for the 'Shakespeare' challenge at Tolkien Weekly.

I'm not sure if they are the first ever drabble set to cross Shakespeare with Middle Earth, but in them I imagine a copy of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare somehow having slipped between dimensions so that it now forms the repertoire of a troupe of travelling players in Middle Earth...

If you can't work out which play is which I will put a list at the end!

Rating G
Characters, apart from 'The Players'; Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Faramir, Elladan & Elrohir.

curiouswombat: (Éomer)
The theme for a few weeks at [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly was summer sports. The very first one was 'Swimming', which reminded me of a drabble I wrote a couple of years ago, and so I picked up from that one. The result is a two minute period told in six new drabbles - plus the original one - I think this may be more drabble to the minute than I have ever achieved, or wanted to achieve, before!

If anyone can think of a better title please throw it at me... ETA - and [livejournal.com profile] hhimring did just that.

This is a set of six true drabbles written for the Hairdressing challenges at Tolkien Weekly.

They feature the inhabitants of Ithilien and would fit into the Returnverse series - but they work perfectly well even if you don't recognise Tindómë's name.

Rated G
600 words.

Love Token )
curiouswombat: (Éowyn portrait)
I wrote these for the Fell Beasts challenge at [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly which finished three weeks ago - and just remembered to gather them together, here.

There are six drabbles looking at the realities of parenthood as discovered by Éowyn.

In my long series of stories Faramir and Éowyn call their first son Boromir - followed by Théodwyn, Finduilas, Echthelion, and Elboron, their youngest. These stories feature Boromir and Théodwyn as small children of about four and six.
