Welcome to my new laptop! It is rather pretty, and weighs much less than the old one. It has a hard-drive the size of Belgium - most of which is like virgin snow at the moment as almost everything is on the old hard-drive. But I now have the old hard-drive in a caddy plugged into this pretty new pooter - how useful is that? Although some files are still not identified - like 'Old e-mails I need to keep'which is somewhere on the old drive labelled with a string of numbers, or my bookmarked file for the net, which is apparently another file with no name only a string of numbers. However my wonderful husband is really good at sorting all that out for me, so I should be able to get at most things from the old one. Also new pooter has a very clear wide screen, and slightly bigger keys, although my fingers don't quite find them all easily yet!

Link to info and picture of pretty new laptop!

Also my thumb is healing nicely, although still wrapped up and a bit tender!

Wow! That is a pretty laptop! And with a Centrino platform, no less...;-)

Hope you get nothing but joy out of this one!

I loved my old one dearly, and it had worked very hard - I had written so much on it that many of the letters on the keyboard had disappeared, but this is much clearer, and weighs so little - 2.9kg. It's just getting things I use a lot onto this hard-drive so's I can just plug the caddy one in when required. Turning the old h-d into a plug-in was a very clever idea of the guy in the shop, as it has lots of my picture files on it.

Very good news is that it is possible we can claim at least something off the household insurance for the old one - also pointed out to us by the local computer shop, it hadn't occured to us.

YAY! Now I want one. This old one is, well, old. And slow. I may have to get one before WriterCon.

I'm so happy for you!

Isn't it neat? And it is really light - about 6.5lbs. It hadn't occured to me how heavy the old one was, until I picked this one up!

Just keep that drool away from my swanky new keyboard - which actually has all the vowels written on its keys! How revolutionary is that?

It really is rather nice to look at - the keys are not quite in the same places as on the old one, somehow - I can't automatically hit the shift key every time yet - I get the up arrow by mistake, and suddenly realise I'm in the line above where I expect!

Congrats! A new computer is kind of like a new notebook used to be - all clean and shiny and full of promise - except way faster and linked to the internet!

Happy to read that your thumb is doing better. I've sliced mine open more than once, usually at work, then had to get myself over to the emergency room. No National Health Care over here but at least the employer had to pay for everything.

Great looking computer. Recently a dot com millionaire donated some money to the school where I'm the tech and I get to buy some new computers. Sounded great until I realized that I had to add XP Pro to each computer and raised the price on each one. So now I'm scrambling to maxamize every penny I can get into each machine.

I hate XP Pro.

New computer buying can be more fraught than you'd think, can't it? Of course, for school, being robust might be a top priority. If you are buying lap-tops for school I can't speak for how robust this is going to be - but the vowels wore off the Acer quite quickly, and the catch broke within the first 18 months or so.

Now we want a picture of your shiny new laptop, sitting in its favorite place, maybe complete with Shaka if he feels like cooperating.

I'm glad to hear that the thumb is healing nicely.

Nice laptop! Twice the hard drive size of mine ... plus portable, which mine no longer is. I try to avoid replacing my computers until they're ancient, partially because of the problem with transferring files -- even though I could just burn them onto a disk. Luckily, I can't afford a new one, so I don't have to worry about that problem. Did I say luckily?

Date: 12/01/2006 08:50 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
This is a lot more portable than the previous one. The caddy thing to make the hard-drive from the old one into an external drive for the new one is very neat, and not expensive. It is a 'Sweex 2.5 mobile storage solution' - well at least that's what it says on the front of it!

Very pretty. My PC is a Sony Vaio and I've been looking longingly at their laptops for a while.

I must admit to slight twinges of envy whenever I hear about people with computer savvy husbands. I'm about to teach mine how to copy and paste...

Glad to hear the thumb is healing.

It took me about a month to figure out how to copy and paste. Heck, I wrote my first fiction in pencil, and used a manual typewriter for years -- that's quite a learning curve.

Congratulations! My last laptop was a VAIO, and my daughter still uses it. It was an early model, but I liked it a lot. I replaced it with another type of PC only because I got a really good deal.

I think we will get on well together - although I was rather attached to my old Acer, and can understand why my daughter hates updating or replacing computers because of all the fle transfers. The little detachable hard-drive in a box is neat though - I will just transfer over as required.

Oooh, very nice!

<http://www.backflip.com> and <http://murl.com> are both neat websites that let you bookmark pages so you can reach them from any computer. I use both (started with backflip but it had availability issues for a short while during which I found murl), so all my favorite places are bookmarked in two different spots. I can reach them from my mom's house, the library, internet cafe, work . . . very handy.

I came back to this post of yours today to ask you if you're struggling with a "feature" of the Vaio.

When I get typing, my palms brush the finger pad and invariably the web page I'm on goes back to the previous. The pad seems so sensitive! And then I lose everything I've typed.

I have to adjust my hands, I guess. Grrrrr....

Date: 22/01/2006 05:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
Yes - I've done it a couple of times - although I usually avoid it because I had the same problem with my old one sometimes as well - and I've given up wearing bracelets with things hanging from them all together because I used to catch the touch pad so often with them.
