curiouswombat: (Nice day)
[personal profile] curiouswombat
The second part of the post of my daughter's pictures of Sark are below the cut. They feature the garden of the Seigneurie, the traditional home of the feudal lord of the island. There are a couple of lovely pictures. You can tell it has been a nice autumn down in the Channel Islands when you look at the pictures and remember she took them on 6th October.

This is the Seignurie -

Sark seignurie

And here is a tower in the wall surrounding the gardens -

Sark tower

And the dove-cot, which I love dearly -

Sark dovecot

Now come through into the garden -

Sark flowers

I'm thinking that fuchsia must have made her feel quite at home!

And finally - a close-up of that rather beautiful metal hinge on the door through to the garden -

These are so beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I don't expect to get to Sark anytime soon, so especially glad to have a peep at it!

I'm not likely to, either - so being able to visit vicariously with my daughter is fun for you and me both!

A place of visual wonders. I love the dovecot particularly.

I love it too - especially the idea that the person in charge would need a step ladder to get into it.

It is rather lovely - and my daughter does take some good pictures to give us the feel of the place.

Sark is certainly an interesting small island. Fortunately D-d usually doesn't mind me sharing her pictures of places :)

Those are lovely shots... you know me, I especially like the doorway ones. That's a much prettier side of Sark than some of the other photos. Very picturesque.

I like the doorway ones, too. These pictures of the gardens of 'the big house' reminded me of the walled garden I wrote about in the Éowyn/Faramir drabbles a while ago.

Wow! That is a stunningly beautiful set of buildings and the garden is every bit as gorgeous. Your daughter really has quite an eye for photography!

Sark is quite a unique place and one I'd love to visit some day, but I think you're right about not wanting to stay there. What I've been reading says that Sark was the last feudal government in Europe and it seems they've only given up that form of government kicking and screaming. It really does have a 'Wicker Man' sort of vibe. :-p

From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
I think she has a very good eye, too. And that garden is certainly very photographic.

The Wicker Man is not a comparison D-d would make - it's not really part of her consciousness - to her it felt more 'local shop for local people' which is from the TV show The League of Gentlemen. Same concept, though!

My memory of the decision to actually devolve some power from the Seigneur or the Dame is that the real local people mainly weren't at all bothered - they were mainly happy enough as things were; it was the incomers who made the most fuss to have more say...

D-d said that, to her, it was certainly somewhere to visit rather than live - she felt it was a bit 'local shop for local people'...

I'll pass on the compliments to her photography, thank you.

I've been to Sark once, many years ago. It doesn't look like it has changed one bit. The guy whose tractor we hitch-hiked with was at least in his late sixties and had never been off the island. He wasn't entirely sober and told us he made his own butter and brewed his own beer. He shared said beer with us too. It became a very jolly and inebriated visit.

I know we have people on our island who have never been off it - so I shouldn't be surprised that the same is true of Sark - but I would have thought the bright lights of Guernsey(!) might have been a temptation!

I can imagine his butter would have been good - D-d says Guernsey butter is absolutely wonderful. Come to think of it she has also sampled their local ale - but none on Sark as it was a Sunday.

I love the tower with the red door and the dovecote (which also has a red door...)Stone walls and hidden garden corners...the Secret Garden comes to mind even though Sark is far from the Yorkshire moors.
Beautiful!

Those touches of red are really good, aren't they? And yes - it is rather Secret Garden.
