I mentioned my fic Pure Morning in an e-mail at breakfast time today, and I've been going around singing the Placebo song that gave it its title ever since.

Except I've been singing the Rohirric version - my brain keeps changing the words to

"A friend in need's a friend indeed, a friend with mead is better."

For those who have never quite worked out what this has to do with my story, here are the full lyrics, with the relevant lines in italics...

"Pure Morning"

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
A friend with weed is better,
A friend with breasts and all the rest,
A friend who's dressed in leather,

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
A friend who'll tease is better ,

Our thoughts compressed,
Which makes us blessed,
And makes for stormy weather,

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
My Japanese is better,
And when she's pressed she will undress,
And then she's boxing clever,

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
A friend who bleeds is better,

My friend confessed she passed the test,
And we will never sever,

Day's dawning, skins crawling [repeat three more times]
Pure morning, [repeat this three more times]

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
A friend who'll tease is better,

Our thoughts compressed,
Which makes us blessed,
And makes for stormy weather,

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
A friend who bleeds is better,

My friend confessed she passed the test,
And we will never sever,

Day's dawning, skins crawling [repeat three more times]
Pure morning,[repeat this three more times]

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
My Japanese is better,
And when she's pressed she will undress,
And then she's boxing clever,

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
A friend with weed is better,
A friend with breasts and all the rest,
A friend who's dressed in leather

It is one of my favourites - a good earworm to have. Mind you once I got mead in my mind it has stuck there.

I've never seen them live, but d-d has - the first time was at Ally Pally in April 2006 - when the bar staff insisted on carding her, getting all huffy about her Manx Driving licence not being an English one and calling the manager... when she was trying to buy 3 hot chocolates as it was cold in the queue!

Ah! I just read this story and loved it.

Thank you! It grew out of a chance remark in a conversation following a drabble I wrote - and once it took my brain over I couldn't do anything but write it.

I love Placebo, but somehow I had never heard that song. I really like it!

It is one of my favourites - but it was S2C who pointed out how applicable it was to the story that I couldn't find a title for. We were looking to use a line, maybe, but then I thought to go with the song's title. The result is that, unless you know the song, the title seems unrelated to the story.

Total earworm! I've always liked that song though so I'll take it.

Do you want to exchange earworms? I've had "Hang down your head, Tom Dooley" stuck in my brain for days. I just finished reading a fascinating book about the case (http://www.amazon.com/The-Ballad-Tom-Dooley-Novel/dp/0312558171/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339633764&sr=8-1). I had no idea he was a real person! However the song... it needs to get out of my brain!

I'm hoping to keep Pure Morning - even with the mead. But now that you have planted the seed...

I think I did read about Tom Dooley being an actual person a few years ago, probably in a book review in a Sunday paper or similar - but don't really know an awful lot about him.

Pure Morning is one of those songs that's always playing at the back of my mind somewhere. Now you've brought it to the fore again...and I don't know whether I should thank you or throttle you.

Oh, thank me, definitely - and don't look at the comment above where Zanthinegirl mentions her current ear-worm!

I always loved that story of yours, and your earwig is perfect for it.

Thank you! I am quietly proud of that story - and the title makes much more sense when you know the lyrics of this song.
