Happy 231st Independence Day to my friends in America!

Belated Happy 140th Canada Day to my Canadian friends!
And I know it's a bit early - but -

And finally -

Apologies to anyone I've missed!

Date: 04/07/2007 07:51 pm (UTC)There are a lot of pictures of Tynwald Hill, but it is not terrribly exciting. The Tynwald actually have an open-air sitting on the original hill on July 5th - the rest of the time we let them meet indoors!

Date: 04/07/2007 07:57 pm (UTC)To be honest, although Tynwald Day has been observed continuously since that nominal date of 979, there have been times when the island was more or less a private feifdom and Tynwald had only nominal power - but continue it did, all that time. Which makes it, probably, the oldest continual parliament in the world!

Date: 04/07/2007 08:38 pm (UTC)But I will let you celebrate National Kes Day on July 6th if you like. I could even write a note to your boss like the one I have written for Kes!

Date: 05/07/2007 01:10 am (UTC)The English shouldn't feel left out - they could be celebrating the 231st anniversary of "Yay, We Don't Have to Deal with You Lot Anymore!" day. *g*

Date: 05/07/2007 10:14 am (UTC)We are just used to having so much history behind us - we have neolithic stone circles and things -
You can see why my daughter thought Berlin "very modern - there isn't a building over 300 years old"! Especially as she is at university in York - a city founded in 71 AD,where there are pubs that have been in business without interruption for more than 360 years (The Olde Starr on Stonegate is in a building from about 1550 but has only been licensed premises since sometime before 1644!).

Date: 05/07/2007 12:56 pm (UTC)All over the island it is also Flower Festival week - where a number of churches have beautiful floral displays for the week - usually about 20 of them. We don't often perticipate because, to be honest, it is so much easier to decorate beautiful country chapels like this -
than it is a large plain space with windows only at roof height!

Date: 05/07/2007 09:28 pm (UTC)Of course my Celtic spirit (all Irish on father's side and mostly Irish and Scots with a dash of English and Cherokee Indian on my mother's side) is drawn to my roots and relatives *G*. I fully intend one day to go and see the places where my family originated and meet those few still alive (Sligo county in Ireland mostly). A side trip to the rest of the area would be a given. Now your small corner of the world has become number 2 on that list for me (and Jim as well, lucky for me)...one day...
Meanwhile, thank you for the pictures..they ARE appreciated, savored even, out here in the high deserts of New Mexico.

Date: 05/07/2007 10:50 pm (UTC)I know that because Daughter-dear was only home for two days, and then flew over to Ireland with some friends to have a couple of days in Dublin, and then go to a music festival in Co. Kildare.
My Irish roots (Paternal grandfather) are in Waterford.
Bring a Celt is a bit like being a hobbit when it comes to knowing our ancestors, or wanting to know about them. I think of the Manx Museum and House of Mannanan (http://www.gov.im/mnh/heritage/museums/manxmuseum.xml) being a bit like a Mathom House!
