I declare July 6th to be National Kes Day - and you can have your own personal bank holiday.

Thank you.

We celebrate the first meeting of our parliament, the Tynwald. Although to be honest no-one is 100% sure exactly when it first met - but in 1979 they celebrated the Tynwald millenium even though it is possible that it first sat before 979 by a few years, so we count from there.

Tynwald is from the same root as some of the Scandinavian parliaments - the All-thing, the Storting, the Løgting, the Folkting etc.

Fireworks companies must regard it as almost as good as New Year and Chinese New Year!

Thank you. The dancers are actually at the Tynwald ceremony last year - the one in blue is D-d's teacher from reception, when she was 4!

There are a lot of pictures of Tynwald Hill, but it is not terrribly exciting. The Tynwald actually have an open-air sitting on the original hill on July 5th - the rest of the time we let them meet indoors!

Yay! for July. Any month that includes more than one occasion for fireworks and foodfests is a great month for me!!

And go! on the Tynwald Day...kewl.

Have a lovely day today - may you have good company, good food, and lots of fireworks to watch.

To be honest, although Tynwald Day has been observed continuously since that nominal date of 979, there have been times when the island was more or less a private feifdom and Tynwald had only nominal power - but continue it did, all that time. Which makes it, probably, the oldest continual parliament in the world!

You have your own day in April :~P

But I will let you celebrate National Kes Day on July 6th if you like. I could even write a note to your boss like the one I have written for Kes!

Happy Tynwald Day to you!

Thank you. Ours is tomorrow because the annual meeting of Tynwald used to be at Midsummer - and when the change was made from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian one in 1753 they continued to use the old calendar to calculate the date of this annual public meeting at St John's.

[livejournal.com profile] fenchurche made it over from the Seattle area last autumn. They were able to go and stand on Image Tynwald Hill, which is where this annual open-air meeting of Tynwald happens..

1,028th? Ok, you win! Do you get fireworks as well? (Seriously, how cool is that to have a history that goes back so far.) There's a man in your photo that has a vague-ish resemblance to Giles.

The English shouldn't feel left out - they could be celebrating the 231st anniversary of "Yay, We Don't Have to Deal with You Lot Anymore!" day. *g*

Yep - there will be a fireworks display tonight.

We are just used to having so much history behind us - we have neolithic stone circles and things -

You can see why my daughter thought Berlin "very modern - there isn't a building over 300 years old"! Especially as she is at university in York - a city founded in 71 AD,where there are pubs that have been in business without interruption for more than 360 years (The Olde Starr on Stonegate is in a building from about 1550 but has only been licensed premises since sometime before 1644!).

Oh yes! Happy Tynwald day indeed (or is it now National Week?). Hope all laws are good ones and YAY democracy in action.

Ramsey declare it to be National Week - it was to interest people in their heritage, and to get them to visit Ramsey as well.

All over the island it is also Flower Festival week - where a number of churches have beautiful floral displays for the week - usually about 20 of them. We don't often perticipate because, to be honest, it is so much easier to decorate beautiful country chapels like this -

than it is a large plain space with windows only at roof height!

Thank you for the picture and link. Jim and I (due to getting to "know" you, even though never face to face) have a dream to one day visit the lovely Isle you call home. We check on the web cam's and love your pictures.

Of course my Celtic spirit (all Irish on father's side and mostly Irish and Scots with a dash of English and Cherokee Indian on my mother's side) is drawn to my roots and relatives *G*. I fully intend one day to go and see the places where my family originated and meet those few still alive (Sligo county in Ireland mostly). A side trip to the rest of the area would be a given. Now your small corner of the world has become number 2 on that list for me (and Jim as well, lucky for me)...one day...

Meanwhile, thank you for the pictures..they ARE appreciated, savored even, out here in the high deserts of New Mexico.

Kathleey

Flights from Dublin only take 40 minutes....

I know that because Daughter-dear was only home for two days, and then flew over to Ireland with some friends to have a couple of days in Dublin, and then go to a music festival in Co. Kildare.

My Irish roots (Paternal grandfather) are in Waterford.

Bring a Celt is a bit like being a hobbit when it comes to knowing our ancestors, or wanting to know about them. I think of the Manx Museum and House of Mannanan (http://www.gov.im/mnh/heritage/museums/manxmuseum.xml) being a bit like a Mathom House!
