I have been very remiss, I haven't posted anything to my journal for a week. One reason is that I haven't been doing anything very note-worthy, but the main one is that I am in a constant battle for my computer with the cat. He is determined to either lie across my lap between my chest and the lap-top, or across the front of the lap-top, or beside me on the settee, resting his head on the right hand side of the keyboard and/or the wireless receiver for my mouse.

None of these options are conducive to me being able to write much coherently, and so I opt for either just reading things, or not using the lap-top except when the cat goes out to pee! Currently he has been sitting on the window sill, and has just noticed that I have left a brand new suede bag on the other end of the settee, and has decided sleeping on it might be even more fun than sleeping on the laptop! And in relief I am letting him. (For those who like to know these things, it is a good big size, in a nice autumnal red with black leather trim.)

So - I have spent some time this afternoon up-loading 'Ten Years After' to a new archive site -
Just Rewards at the invitation of Athenewolfe (Of the Fang Fettish Awards) who is maintaining it. It is a site only for award winning fics - so well worth a visit, because even if you don't always agree with exactly which fic wins which award, the one thing you can be pretty sure of is that award winning fics are usually without too many typos, and with punctuation!

Something else I have been meaning to do is to copy my friend [livejournal.com profile] beckyzoole who puts up a weekly list of Reasons to be Grateful, which I think is a really good idea. So here is my list of reasons to be grateful this week:

I have a husband I love, who loves me, and we both know this even if we bicker!

I have a beautiful daughter, who is settling into her new life at university well, and who voluntarily rings home sometimes.

I have a mother whose 80th birthday party my sister and I are arranging for January - and she is in good enough health that we know she will likely be around to celebrate!

I can afford to eat enough that I am obese when so many others in the world are undernourished.

I have a laptop computer to keep me in touch with all of my friends around the world.

I have a new red handbag which is keeping the cat occupied.

Today has been a gloriously crisp autumn day, with leaves on the ground to scrunch.

I bought some Whittards "Winter Warmer" coffee and it is wonderfully soothing.

Isn't it nice to have so many things to be grateful for?

Wow. That's certainly a novel way of looking at it I hadn't considered yet...perhaps I shopuld give it a try, too. ;-)

Some lovely reasons. :) However small or silly, they all certainly count!

Aw! Is it getting chilly? Is the cat going for laptop warmth? You should send him on secondment to mine, then, since it keeps overheating. He'd love it.

Date: 22/10/2006 10:42 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
I'm sure it is the warmth - even though the house is positively hot, despite S2C's regular claims to be cold! I have been thinking of buying the cat his own microwaveable heat pad to stop him sitting on the computer - it shows how my thought processes work that it was only as I typed that that it occured to me that I should also buy one for the husband! But then if I did get S2C one the cat would sit on him.......wait a minute - that might solve all my problems!

My laptop is a Vaio - I must check sometime that it isn't one of the ones that is likely to overheat.....

I just opened my up to clean it and it was full of unspeakable horrors - can only imagine what adding cat hair to the mix would do.

But then if I did get S2C one the cat would sit on him.......wait a minute - that might solve all my problems!
Lol! I'm picturing Shaka on Speaker's head like Charlie Brown's Davy Crockett hat.

Heh. I think it's only certain Dells and iBooks that are on the batterly-erupting critical list, but it would be worth a look.

Eh - except I meant battery. Batterly is half of how posh people pronounce Utterly Butterly.

I have this vague feeling that I heard them say something on TV on Friday about them now having to recall the batteries in some of their own Vaios as well - but I was only half listening - even though it does imply that I might end up with a totally new meaning to the concept of the burning bush!!

Shaka as a head warmer for S2C - did you have a book called 'The Three legged Cat' by Margaret Mahey when you were little?

If you don't recognise it, here is the synopsis from Amazon - "Mrs Gimble's cat would love to prowl, but has only three legs. Mrs Gimble's brother, Cyril, travels, but he is thinking of stopping because his head is cold. When Cyril visits Mrs Gimble, he picks up the cat instead of his hat - which keeps his head warm and allows the cat to travel. "

Only of course Shaka has four legs.

Argh!

I don't recognise the story. I do remember one though about a baker's cat climbing into an airing cupboard and inflating to vast sizes. Children's stories are wonderful and probably why we all end up writing crack fic.

I have a 7-month old kitten that only decides to cuddle with me when I'm at the computer.

I adore your gratitude list. They sound like very good reasons indeed.

Looks like an interesting site!

I love your attitude: searching for the good things, even letting the cat interfere with your internet fun. I don't think I'd have that kind of patience. My daughter's cat was here for a week, but all he'd do is lay on the table by the monitor, giving me occasional offended looks whenever I sneezed. :-)

Fortunately Shaka doesn't make me sneeze. Have you had the wedding? How did it go?

yes, the wedding was a week ago Saturday, and all went well. I'll get a pic spam up as soon as possible; things have been a bit more overwhelming than usual around here.

Otis was never interested in the computers. Wiley on the other hand liked to sit on the desk whenever I was on the computer. I decided that he was my photography muse. Since he is no longer around, I keep a picture of him on my scanner in NYC, to give me inspiration.

It's a wonderful list, and I could use four of your gratitudes for mine as well.

Our cat was very needy right after his girl left for college, but he has mellowed out. Also, after the first six weeks with hardly a visit, Bojoette has started coming around on the weekends. It makes her kitty very happy. It's okay with me, too!

An attitude of gratitude makes life ever so pleasant.

The list of gratitude is a very good exercise now and again.

Sadly my daughter is never likely to just pop around from college at the weekend, but it is nice that she rings, anyway.

Thanks. D-d says she is eating quite a lot of salads, but the parents of her housemates are providing too much cake - the table in their dining area is groaning under cake and biscuits for them all she says. I had just added some Kendal Mint Cake and a small rich fruit cake to a pacel of stuff I had ordered on-line to be sent to her, and felt rather guilty after that conversation!

I picked up the weekly gratitude list from [livejournal.com profile] technoshaman. I'm glad to see it's getting about!

He lists his every Thursday, right as rain. I'm not nearly so punctual. Sometimes it's really hard to think of things I'm grateful for, especially without falling back on the basic "my SO, my daughters, my friends, etc". But it's on those days that the exercise is really the most useful.

Hurray for warm cats and red handbags!

But then they are some of the very best things to be grateful for!

I think the 'Thankful' list is a rally good idea - I've been meaning to copy it from you for ages! Send [livejournal.com profile] technshaman my thanks.

Thanks - at the moment I am grateful for possession of most of a keyboard - the cat's chin on the 'end' and 'right arrow' keys doesn't seem to be doing much harm at the moment....

I used to keep a small "greatful" notebook for years - I still have it somewhere. I think it's a good idea, helps keep things in perspective and keep a good attitude. Yay for computers and new handbags and plenty of food!

It is a very good exercise now and again, to look at what you have, and be thankful! Currently the cat has decided in favour of the computer, and abandoned the handbag!
