So - Daughter-dear and I have our own car. Not a car owned by my employers, or owned by S2C, but owned by me. And she's allowed to drive it. On her own once she passes her test! She did her theory test on Saturday and passed that, so she's heading towards her R plates now.

So - our car - is a white Citroen C3, 3 years old, done 17,300 miles, and is very cute -

It is not quite as tiny as I had actually considered getting – I had thought of a Micra, or even a VW Lupo – but I called into one of the local second hand car dealers, saw this, and fell in love. It is just so cute and cuddly looking - see

The maroon car in the second pic is S2Cs Octavia. The C3 is a good bit shorter, for sure - it is only about 9 foot from bumper to bumper – 3m max.

D-d and I felt that as it is so cute, it ought to have a name – she thought female. She suggested Frances, as it is French, but I wasn’t sure. I thought something that went with Citroen – maybe Cissy – she said a loud ‘No!’

I said it was a pity that the car’s designation is just a letter and a number, C3 doesn’t lend itself to turning into a name….except C3PO of course. ‘That would be C3 Po!’ D-d laughed. ‘PO!’ I said. ‘The car is called Po! – it looks as if it belongs in Telly-tubby land! It is a Telly-tubby car, and it is called Po!’

And so it is!

We went out in Po today for D-d to try driving it, and on the whole she managed well – her actual driving is now fine, but she still has problems getting from totally stationary to moving forwards – she tends to stall. Fortunately Po is very forgiving and when she stalled him/her/it five of six times trying to get out of the lane beside the house, where the pictures were taken, there was no sign at all of the car being put out by this behaviour.

I had wanted D-d to stand beside Po to help you with scale if you are a non-European, but she didn’t want her picture taken, and couldn’t even be bothered to take mine – she was tired when we got home. However as I said, Po is not quite 9’ long, and stands about 5’ high. Isn’t it just one of the cutest cars you have ever seen?

I know - and what's even better is that it is class 2 insurance (important with an eighteen year old learner on it!)- does really well in the NCAP safety tests so she probably won't be too badly injured if she dunches it, and it has enough room in the back for 2 real people, or even 3 if they are teenagers who know each other well, and a boot big enough to put the shopping in - it is remarkably useable!

My first car was an Allegro - my sister was throwing it out.

Her husband reckoned the engine wouldn't last more than another 2-300 miles, and was amazed that I drove it all around the North of England, and backwards and forwards to the Isle-of-Man for about two years. I never told him that I took it to the little back-street garage near my house in North Shields almost as soon as I got back from the Island with it, and they put a complete engine out of a much younger wrecked Allegro into it!

My first vehicle was a few years before that - it was a 200cc Yamaha.

Lurvely. I like round bubbly cars - my Mum has one of the new model Nissan Micras, and I'm trying to convince her to swop with me ;-)

It does look rather like the new Micra doesn't it? I think 'bubble' when I look at it too.

The mechanic up at Tromode Motors said that it would appeal to a teenager as it looks 'sporting' - and I thought sporty was about the last thing it was!!

It has a very pattable butt - I'm hoping it doesn't get it patted by too many walls when she gets let loose on her own!

My first ever vehicle looked like this -Image only orange.

If the link doesn't work - it was a little Yamaha!

So, Speaker has a detailed knowledge of Skoda jokes? *g*

From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
The clutch is a wee bit 'digital' - it's on or off with little travel - but otherwise I think it is just perfect for learning.

Actually I don't think we've heard any 'Skoda' jokes since a couple of weeks after we got it - it was one of the very first Octavias in the UK, and it only took a couple of weeks of 'actually it is an Audi A3 with a bigger boot, and at only half the price' for people to go 'Hmm - maybe I'll buy one.'

OH!! It is adorable! I am madly in love with Po! The new Mini-Cooper seems to be becoming very popular in the States; there are several in our small town, and they look so cute, I wanted one. but I like Po just as well. I spent the majority of my teenaged years and early 20's in original VW Beetles, so I guess I have a thing for small cars. In fact, my very favorite car in the entire world is a 1963 TR3 (first choice = purple; second choice = British Racing Green).

*covets your adorable car*

Isn't it sweet? It's actually pretty practical as well - there is room for two comfortably in the back, and the boot/trunk is big enough for a week's shopping!

It is a sort of updated version of the old Beetle shape, as well.

It's a cute car, but since I stand over six feet taller lets just say that I would rather admire it than ride in it.

Looking at the grill right now, looks like it holds the rank of corporal.

Actually it has a lot of head room. My brother-in-law who is 6'8" and about 280lb often drives a Nissan Micra - which is a simlar shape, but a bit smaller! They have the Seat equivalent of a Chrysler Voyager - but my sister usually has that - her husband prefers the Micra! It always amazes me how he actually folds himself up to get into it.

The corporal's stripes are the Citroen badge.

I used to own my own car before we got married, but as I have a company car at work it made sense for S2C to have a car that suited him, and I would use it at weekends. Although actually I drive his more than he does, and I like his car - but this one is just so sweet, and he would never have chosen it.

Having your name on the ownership documents feels good, though, doesn't it?

Ah, I forgot that y'all lack that great American institution, the vanity plate; there's an orange Audi sportscar in town with the license plate PAPAYA, for instance.

On the other hand, there's no Citroens at all around here, except for occassional very old ones like Giles'.

Julia, too bad, for Po is very cute indeed

Date: 07/05/2006 11:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
Yes - all Manx cars have plates that are either a mix of letters and numbers and start or finish with 'MAN' or BMN, CMN etc. - no possibility of a vanity plate - although MAN 1C has been passed from car to car!

Po is a rather cute car, isn't it - no sharp bits at all.

Giles owned a DS19 - a very much older one! (1955 - 65). It was about the same relation to Po as a Ford Edsel and a Ford Fiesta.

But it was indeed a Citroen.

It's adorable! But I warn you that once daughters get their drivers licenses, they tend to monopolize the vehicles.

Date: 08/05/2006 07:49 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
She can only monopolise it whilst she is on the same land mass - when she's at home I'll use the Octavia, when she's at uni. I'll use Po!

They are heavily discouraged from taking cars to university - first years are only given campuus parking permits if they are disabled - and as they live on campus this in effect means no cars. Seconds and thirds are also unlikely to get parking permits - so she won't be taking Po away.

Cute as a button, and I love the dual purpose name.

My son's girlfriend's father recently bought the cutest little red sport car convertible (yes, I do believe it was the result of mid-life crisis). He allowed his daughter and my son to borrow it for a day, and great fun was had by all. It is only a two-seater, so we had to take turns being chauffeured about. My poor husband couldn't fold his frame into the tiny thing.

Our Bojoette drives a small, old Toyota Corolla. It is more a box than a bubble. For our family car, however, we have a large Chrysler. It doesn't have much personality, so it doesn't have a name.

I rather fancied the Toyota Yaris - the one smaller than the Corolla - the even smaller one (The Aygo?) was a bit too tiny.

Actually it has quite a lot of legroom for the driver - the seat is quite high, with the option of higher - so someone tall would probably manage it quite well. As I said in a comment above my 6'8" brother in law drives a Nissan Micra from choice - he eschews the people carrier and takes the Micra whenever possible!!
