curiouswombat: (notes from a small island)

Yesterday evening S2C, D-d and I went out for a meal with a friend from a very long time ago. When we lived in the NE of England we had a group of friends with whom we played D&D every week. One of that group, whose mother used to babysit D-d when she was a baby, was visiting the island for TT with friends and got in touch.

So we three, and Alan and the two friends he was camping with, met at our favourite Chinese restaurant and had a lovely evening. One of the guys did something I've never thought of doing in a Chinese restaurant - he had lobster.

I thought you might like to see it -

Chinese lobster!

It was, he says, as yummy as it looks.

My Char Sui with Chinese leaves and fried rice was very yummy too - but I only took a picture of the lobster.

We were amazed to find that the old D&D group still meets every Wednesday - so it has been going strong for well over 30 years!

My dad used to manage just one man - a Hong Kong Chinese guy with hospitable instincts and very firm ideas about good Chinese cooking. He used to arrange banquets at Chinatown restaurants he approved of. Absolutely the right word, though the bill was always ludicrously discounted for him, like £20 a head including wine. There was always lobster then, and it was *amazing*.

Sniff. I miss those days.

Btw, I laughed, rereading your post - such shorthand we LJers use and teach each other. S2C, D-d, D&D, TT, NE, and I didn't blink when first reading.

We do rather, don't we?

Sounds rather good. Somehow I never think of lobster in the context of Chinese - but then this restaurant does venison too - Alan had the venison and declared it to also be very good.

It also has one of the best views on the island - good place.

Around here you can't get lobster in Chinese restaurants. Wow! It's gorgeous!
Isn't it great to reconnect with old friends?
:)

It was a good evening - and we got on really well with his mates, too, which was good.

The lobster does look amazing - maybe I'll try it sometime!

And suddenly I am desperately hungry. It looks amazing! I love the yellow flower.

The flower was really the perfect finishing touch!

That sounds lovely - the meeting as well as the food! ;o) I've never seen lobster on the menu on a Chinese restaurant before, but then, I've never been to a Chinese restaurant close enough to the sea either to make it reasonable serving it, I suppose. Duck is already rather exotic! *g*

How awesome that this group still meets, and that the friendships formed there still exist. It's so awesome to meet with friends from waaay back who are stillf rriends. I just had a lovely dose of that myself: a Chinese friend living in Malaysia came to visit two times during the last ten days (interrupted by a trip through Germany). We've been pen pals since we were 12, and while we didn't always keep the letter exchange going, we stayed in touch over the years.

This particular restaurant also does venison - which is pretty odd on a Chinese menu, I think.

And yes - meeting up with old friends is fun - nice to know you've been doing the same. I was really amazed to imagine that the D&D group still met.

Amazing the D&D group is still going strong after all those years!

Glad you had a pleasant evening.

I was really surprised when he said they still met - a couple of new members, he said, but still many of the original core group.

Looks lovely. Hope he wasn't expected to eat it with chopsticks :)

They gave him a pair of nutcrackers and a thing rather like a fondue fork, also a big bowl for his bits of shell - very organised!

It's wonderful when you meet old friends you have't seen in a long time, and have a great time together, isn't it?

I must remind myself though not to look at your LJ right before supper. That lobster looks most scrumptious, and lobster is my favourite sea food.

It was a good evening - and I promise the next pictures on my journal will not be of food!

Interesting! A local chinese place has lobster on the menu, but it's never occurred to me to order it! I might have to try it one of these days.

But how neat that the D&D group still meets after so long!

It had never occurred to me either - and I'm tempted now.

I was really surprised when Alan said they still met with quite a few of the original members.

It's lovely to get together with old friends. Your dinner sounds delicious.

I tried playing D&D long ago but couldn't get into it. I'm a poor excuse for a nerd.

Dinner was very good. Playing D&D really depends on having a good person to design and run the adventures - without that it is difficult to see what is going on - or why!

Mmm... that does look good.
Sounds like a great evening. And wonderful that the group still meets. You should pop by this way, one day, and join in again.

Yum! I do like lobster... and so does my daughter, who's become rather too addicted to it for our pocketbooks. She gets regular replies of "NO!" when she looks a menu and starts to say, "Dad, can I order the lobs--"

Kudos to your game group for their longevity!
