curiouswombat: (notes from a small island)
[personal profile] curiouswombat
Saturday was the first day it was warm enough to walk Mum's doglet on the Ayres without a coat.

Yesterday was a good day to hang out washing - except that my clothes pole had broken over the winter... D-d came for dinner and we had roast duck, courtesy of my mum, and I made rhubarb fool. This reminded me that there was a problem with my hand mixer - the clash of metal on metal, blade hitting blade, is good in a fight scene - but not so good when the mixer makes it!

Today was a public holiday and so S2C and I set off and achieved the following;
  • broken garden chair and garden umbrella to the Amenity site - along with a few other bits of rubbish.
  • new clothes pole from B&Q.
  • new phone for Mum from Currys
  • new Blue-ray player for us ditto.
  • new mixer from local electronics shop
  • new sound bar thing for TV ditto (guess which one of us wanted that...)

  • Also today I changed our bed and washed the bedding, and cleaned the window frames in the bedroom.

    It definitely all sounds like spring!

    The weather has been so much nicer this week too - back to the nice clear weather we had in March - but warmer.

    Here are a few pictures taken during the week-

    A beautifully calm day down on the south coast of the island;

    Gansey

    Where the swans were enjoying a little sea-bathing;

    Sea going swans at Gansey

    And three taken on the East coast, at Baldrine.

    Looking towards the nor'north east;

    Baldrine 3

    Looking towards Snaefell;

    Baldrine 2

    And some calves;

    Baldrine 1

    The east of the island escaped the big snow fairly unscathed - so these calves are the lucky ones.

    And, finally, I just like the look of this;

    Stars in spring

    They are part of the lights that decorate Douglas promenade both for Christmas and on summer evenings - but stay in situ all year round to save money....

    Congratulations on finally getting Spring and all the nice new things.
    We seem to have turned the corner here as well and the trees are starting to leaf out at last.

    That is a nice decoration no matter what time of the year it is.

    There are trees on the main road into Douglas that I use as a sort of calendar of seasons; they are now more leaf than bare branch.

    I am glad you agree about the star decorations looking nice against the blue sky, unlit.

    Such gorgeous pics!

    You will let me know if and when you decide to get a live-in maid/cook, right?

    You seem to be having perfect spring weather finally, and we are enjoying perfect autumn weather whilst it lasts. I enjoyed your pics. I love visiting the Isle of Man through your eyes.

    I am glad that you are having a nice autumn - I rather like autumn.

    Autumn is normally my favourite season, but we haven't had as much of the beautiful, settled weather I normally associate with it.

    Hooray for sunshine and warmth! I'm glad you're finally getting spring, and it sounds like you're making the most of it.

    What gorgeous scenery. I absolutely love swans.

    You had SUCH a productive day. *beams*

    It was a really productive day - definitely a day off work well used.

    It always amuses me, for some reason, to see swans cruising along the shore line.

    Definitely sounds like spring. :)
    A RL doggie friend of mine has just returned to the UK from a judging assignment on your island. I told her it was beautiful and she would love it. She did. Says she can see herself living there. LOL

    Ah - one of the little girls who come to church said she was spending 'all day at a dogshow' when we spoke last week about what they had coming up!

    I'm really glad your friend liked it.

    FINALLY spring!!

    Funny how it seems to be hitting a lot of LJ (northern hemisphere at least) at the same time, as far flung as we are. Your spring sounds and looks like ours, though the landscape is quite different.

    It's fascinating, isn't it, how very similar spring is for us all even though we can be so far apart and living in such different environments.

    Really beautiful pictures! :)
    Tell me, what are the sea temperatures in the summer? Do people usually go swimming?

    Date: 07/05/2013 07:34 am (UTC)
    From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
    Current sea temperature is about 7C - by the middle of summer it gets to about 15C. People do go swimming then, but it is never really warm.

    I've been spending as much time as possible in the garden, doing what I can. When I come indoors, I don't have any energy left to tackle the house. I need a rainy day in order to do some spring cleaning indoors!

    I have been working outdoors in my coat, but it looks as though we're set for some beautiful weather for the rest of the week.

    I don't believe Mr. Bojo has heard about sound bar yet. Just as well!

    One of these days, I'll replace our DVD. When I hit the eject button, the tray slides out and slide back in just as quickly! It takes speed and accuracy to insert or remove a disc!

    My next indoor task is t do the windows in the other bedrooms now... when I feel energetic.

    Pity I can't just e-mail you our spare DVD player as it is actually quite new - but tech-man wanted a blue-ray one with wi-fi so that he can watch stuff from it on his computer, or possibly vice-versa...

    The sunshine helps! But then the land of the Prince-bishops is very beautiful, too.

    Oh yes - and as you say, the sunshine helps. But I love how BLUE your landscape is. (Well, "land"-scape...)

    It is such a relief - even though our winter was mainly cold and bright - it did drag on, especially with the horrific snow we had at the end of March.

    Bravo for spring. This is the first Tuesday this year that we haven't had snow, so I guess our spring has also finally arrived - Yippee!!!

    It looks a lovely sunny day on the island :D

    I have bedding on the line - it dried within the hour.

    The beaches look quite stony. Are they like that?

    It was good drying weather today pity I was at work!

    As for the beaches it's a mixture - some of them are sandy -

    What a lovely place your small island is! I love to see all the pretty pictures that you post. :) Two things...

    -- Amenity center?

    -- Doglet?

    :D

    Date: 10/05/2013 07:48 am (UTC)
    From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
    The Amenity Centre is where we take recycling and rubbish too big to fit in the wheelie bin. There are skips for metal, wood, general rubbish, a place for compostables, and a large shed where you leave things that other people might find useful anything from a settee to a printer, crockery to light fittings and books.

    Doglet - she is a long haired chihuahua and my daughter declared her much too small to be considered a proper dog so we think of her as a doglet - like owlet, or booklet!
