I haven't quite kept up - I think by now I should have done gifts, stockings and candy canes.

However - I have made quite a lot of fudge for gifts, and I have a thought for stocking - just not got there - and as we don't usually do candy canes I thought I would, instead, go back to a conversation on [livejournal.com profile] lilachigh's journal about decorating the bathroom for Christmas.

We have a special decoration for our bathroom - I can't forget it - as soon as D-d comes into the house once the decorating starts she searches for the special wee Father Christmas - although he may well not be weeing...

This little ornament sits on top of the toilet cistern;

And here it is from a slightly different angle -

Yep - it's Father Christmas in the Thie Veg, or the netty, or whatever you local name for it is!

Hee...that's adorable.

I am behind (again) on the capturing December meme... it asks for things long before we have them ready to photograph...I am planning another catch-up post at some point.

Isn't he fun? Yes - I'm sort of keeping more with the spirit of the thing than the strict instructions....

Yep...I've never been good with strict instructions. *grin*

Oh, and it's called a dunny or a thunderbox here.

I wish I'd bought two when we got him - which is quite a while ago - because I would have one on mine, too!

Ha! That's hilarious! (And we call that an outhouse in my region.)

Isn't he fun? (Thie veg is the Manx gaelic name - meaning little house, and netty is the Geordie term, from the NE of England.)

I've never seen a Xmas ornament like that. It is sooo cute! Contrary to words like thunderbox, which I have never heard used, although I am familiar with dunny, I refer to that convenience as loo or toilet.

We'd say loo or toilet too - for the indoor version - Thie Veg or netty are names given specifically to the type that is in a little building at the end of the garden - I'm guessing thunderbox might be similar.

He is really rather cute!

Back in the days of outdoor facilities they used to be called a 'lav' - short for lavatory. That was in the city.

Les has a tale of his grandfather, a farmer, sitting in the 'lav' and lighting a cigarette, causing combustion of the methane gas. The explosion threw him out the door. He treated it with more respect after that. Perhaps that is where 'thunderbox' comes from.

I love it! Totally silly and kitch but perfect for your bathroom :-)

In Scotland it would have been called the 'cludgie' :-)

Cludgie - I like that!

And, yes, my Santa with his pants down is wonderfully kitch.
