I don't know if any of my North American friends are ever likely to be visiting the University of Wisconsin in Platteville. But if any of you ever do, you might find a visit to this new museum interesting.

And Happy 'Honorable Clare Christian Day'!

Oh, isn't that just marvelous! Wisconsin is the state next to mine and I travel through it each year to attend a convention in the eastern part of the state (my opportunity to spend an afternoon with Zhie also). So now they will have the Tolkien papers at Marquette University and the Manx Museum. Great!

Definitely a state to visit! :)

Actually, now I think of it, Wisconsin is one of the states with a lot of Manx settlers - we tended to settle around the lakes as there were opportunities for ship-building etc. and a lifestyle that was familiar.

Oh, that makes a great deal of sense. Minnesota has a large Swedish and German population, so I guess each state attracted its own personnel :-)

I should've gone to Minnesta, being Swedish/German! I LOVE cold weather so it would've been a good fit for me

I worked for the UW-Platteville study abroad program in Seville for years.
:)
Interesting!

Well, what do you know! If I'm ever up that way, I'll have to check it out.

And it seems to be on the way to Madison. I guess I will stop by the next time I'm going to WisCon.

You know I was sure I'd commented on your comment...

If you ever do get there I would love to know!

Interesting! I can't say I've had much (OK, any) occasion to spend time at any Wisconsin universities since college debate tournaments, but that's kind of cool! I did stop for lunch in madison last month...

Isn't it neat? And I have to say that I love the idea of them having an Honourable Clare Christian Day!

How fun! And I'm marginally more likely to get to Wisconsin than the real island.

It is a lovely thought - that somewhere near the Great Lakes is a small reminder that people travelled from this little place to that enormous place, and made it home.

I've been to Minneapolis (MN) several times and Chicago (IL) a few, but the University of Wisconsin lies between, and I've not spent much time in Wisconsin. If I'm ever there again, I'll certainly look up the museum.

I've found a little more in the Wisconsin local news (and how wonderful is the internet that I can do that from here!) - this article (http://www.swnews4u.com/section/1/article/7071/) even has a picture of the Hon Clare herself - looking very like her own father.

I loved the title of the article: The Isle of Man, in southwest Wisconsin. It sounds as if you've been relocated!

Are the wigs still worn or was that just for the photo op? It used to be tradition that our presidents wore a top hat for their inaugurations, an article of clothing well suited to the time of Abraham Lincoln but hardly in fashion by the time of John F. Kennedy (who still dutifully wore a silk top hat to his inauguration). Dwight D. Eisenhower, our local Kansas boy, broke with tradition at his inauguration and wore a Homburg (fancy fedora--had to look it up!). I don't recall President Obama wearing a hat at his inauguration. Of course, no one could recall any hat after seeing Aretha Franklin's! http://fashionista.com/2009/01/the-bow-hat-and-madonna-have-something-in-common/
