I'm back. You probably didn't notice I've been gone - but yesterday we had a router failure and had lost all our links with the outside world!

But S2C went to the computer shop, bought a new one, and got it all sorted before he went to bed. So we are, all three, happily able to do whatever we want from google to gossip - and it's nice to be back in the in-crowd!

If it happened to me, I'd run to the computer shop at once, too! I just can't imagine being without internet connection - without my online friends.
Welcome back! :)

It's horrible, isn't it? a bit like being locked in a windowless room!

I wondered where you were.....

I'm actually so paranoid I have a spare router. I suppose that wouldn't surprise you after I look two laptops on holiday!

Is your Island being blown all over the place at the moment?

From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
The computer shop is only about 3 miles away - and a good size. So it's not too bad...

As for being blown around - we've had gale after gale after gale for almost a fortnight - the boat is cancelled again tonight as we expect force 9 again.

Not a sign of calm weather to be seen.

CalMac are not having a good time at the moment.
Our ferry seems to have been cancelled more often than not over the last 5 - 6 weeks. The Small Isles ferry has also been affected and theirs is essential as there is no alternative. Even the ferry from Sconser to Raasay is being hit and that is in a fairly sheltered spot.
Last night Mungo came and shouted at me (and his shout is really strident, you think it is life threatening) and once I'd ruled everything else out I think he was just complaining that I had failed to turn the noise of the wind down and would I Do Something Now!

From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
I don't blame Mungo - it's been like that hasn't it?

Poor CalMac - and poor Small Islands!

The Steam Packet have got an added problem; the Ben is without one of her bow thrusters - it got discarded net caught in it and they are still awaiting a spare part for it. No big problem whilst at sea, but making it difficult to manoeuvre in harbour in rough weather. In fact she got dunched on Friday, docking at Heysham, and had to miss a sailing whilst they mended her. So some sailings are being cancelled more because of difficulties within Heysham than on the Irish Sea. But I wouldn't fancy being out there on her in a Force 9 anyway!

I was saying to Ellyn that it was a bit like being stuck in a windowless room. It's good to be back, even though it was only for a day or so that I was off-line.

Welcome back!
I was thinking of you all day Saturday and Sunday while watching LOTR.

The films are so very pretty - well, apart from the bits where they aren't meant to be! And even then there are usually some good looking men or horses around...

And since it was the US premiere of the extended versions for all three we had lots of extra funny bits - especially with Legolas and Gimli.

I got home from work this evening and was so pleased that we had the internet access sorted - only to find poor LJ was a bit ill. But it seems to be more or less bearing up at the moment.

It's amazing how bereft and isolated we feel (well, I feel) without internet access! However did we manage before?

I'm glad you're back :>)

It's horrible, isn't it? Goodness knows how we managed before! And how we are able to write stories where all those elves manage without it, too... :)

Don't you just hate it when that happens. I now always keep two reserve routers to hand and as soon as I use one, I buy another!

And yes, I did notice that you'd missed your usual Sunday post!

Date: 28/11/2011 09:14 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
I fear we are not quite that organised! I can see S2C might consider it in future though.

I noticed you weren't here! As apparently did plenty of others. Glad to hear you are reconnected. Like one or two others here, I'm paranoid enough to have two routers, though in my case the paranoia is that if I connect up the new one it will be Mysteriously Difficult and I'll lose internet as I did when switching to the current (now the old) one.

I was actually out for lunch, and then busy picking D-d up from the airport as she'd been away for a week, sorting her out something to eat, catching up on her gossip and so on - that I didn't even notice until about 8p.m. that we were off-line. But then I got a bit twitchy...

Date: 28/11/2011 10:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] azalaisdep.livejournal.com
I thought you were a bit quiet for a Sunday!

The Resident Geek and I do occasionally talk about turning domestic Internet off for a week. I think it would do us good - but then of course there's always an excuse not to do it this week...

It's odd without it - I am so used to checking local news, reading, looking things up, keeping up with every one, that I do feel as if I am in a room with no windows when I am without it. And our internet access at work is very restricted, so I can't even catch up with LJ or HASA etc. at lunchtime!

Welcome back. It is rather embarrassing how much I have come to depend on daily contact with my internet friends, but in so many ways you are as close to me as those I see physically often here at home. I would have been waiting for the store to open so that I could get my new router.

Me too. Totally.

S2C went to the computer shop as soon as he'd eaten when he got home from work - but I was already out to work for the day by then... It was good to see the new router and the internet icon when I switched the laptop on!

It's horrible when that happens. When I'm away and busy and distracted as I have been these past 5 days... even THEN I miss the daily contact with people I've come to really appreciate and know and love. When I have no access at home it drives me crazy!

I've been thinking of you with all that stormy weather across the Irish Sea, you do seem to be in the thick of it. At least you got up and running again quickly... as you say, it's something that for one find essential these days.

I've just eaten breakfast by candle-light... it's been a force 9 overnight and until a few minutes ago we had no power. I was saying 'ah well, I can check the news on the laptop...' when it occurred to me that the router wouldn't be working. D-d has a smart phone and got onto the local news with that, to check it was a known power-cut - and now I'm thinking 'I must have a smart phone!'

Breakfast by candlelight... it should sound romantic but I guess it was a bit shivery/cold. Take care on the roads while you're out and about, those abrupt gusts can be very unexpected.

Gadgets, more gadgets - how do we live without them? *g*

I spent the morning in the office with an occasional branch blowing by - but this afternoon I am heading out into the wild blue yonder down country lanes so obscure that they don't have names... still, it's meant to be easing a bit - for an hour or two.

Welcome back! I was offline yesterday as well -- we had a ten-hour power outage due to a truck knocking down a power pole.

Snap!

We got the new router and I was online last night - then woke up this morning with no power... In our case there had been 50-60mph winds overnight which had caused the problem, and after breakfasting by candlelight the power returned a bit after 8a.m.
