5 Oct 2011 01:04 pmFirstly a cat update. Shake is a little stronger and the vet is pleased with his progress. However his lifespan may be seriously curtailed if he continues to consider my handbag as a suitable alternative to outdoors or a litter tray... Fortunately I noticed in time!
Now some silliness - S2C has been deep in a place where Éomer is to be coronated, Eldarion is known as dead, and poor Merry suffers a setback as he recoups from the Black Breath. Yes - he is perusing the summaries in the Lord of the Rings section of Fanfic.net.
We have just been considering which is the most expendable letter in the word Legolas. The letter most likely to be missed out in a summary is the 'o'.
We feel there should, perhaps, be a whole genre devoted to 'Leglas' the elf - whose brother or sister is doubtless called 'Wide-eyed'. If the doyens of the new genre can spell that, of course.
However all these oddities pale into insignificance beside the one he has mentioned on his own journal...
I am copying his entry here for my LotR friends who aren't also his LJ friends.
Alyssa jumped up wide awake her dagger, which she had placed under her pillow, drawn when she heard it; The Screeching whale of the Nazgul...
This is, presumably, from the version of Lord of the Rings where the Council of Elrond decides that the Fellowship shall include Legolas, representing the Elves, Gimli son of Glóin, representing the Dwarves, and Queequeg, representing the Harpooners.
Call me Ishmael Baggins...
It is worth also going over to his journal for some of the comments.

Date: 05/10/2011 12:12 pm (UTC)Soooo glad Shaka is doing better, but that's a bit of a worry, his wanting to do his business in your purse. Cats when they're not well tend to go in different places than their litterbox. Hopefully it's just a temporary glitch for him. *fingers crossed*

I think Shaka may now realise that being ill does not give one permission to pee on my handbag...

Date: 05/10/2011 08:03 pm (UTC)It's one of those things I have looked up to check in the past - and it comes from the same verb as 'abated' (as explained here (http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-bai1.htm), or here in the Oxford English dictionary (http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/bated)) meaning reduced, lowered in force - so bated breath is to breath very shallowly, or to hold the breath - whereas baited breath would mean using it to catch something I guess!

Date: 05/10/2011 05:02 pm (UTC)I am happy that Shaka is feeling better. I always threatened my four-legged former goddesses with becoming one half of a pair of slippers each. They would usually look at me with their wide, light-filled eyes and basically say "Yeah! Riiiight.....!"

Date: 05/10/2011 09:13 pm (UTC)Several years ago, my friend got me a life-sized Legolas cardboard cutout for Christmas. I brought it to my parents house where we were all gathering so that I could show it off to my sis-in-law, who would be terribly jealous!
I set Legolas down in the corner, waiting for Kim to arrive. When she came in I UNFOLDED him and taunted her with my handsome new treat! My mom walked into the room. She said, "He has legs! Why were you calling him legless?!?!"
Mom is not a LOTR fan, and she admitted that she thought that Leg-less was a cruel nickname for the poor fella!

Date: 07/10/2011 07:20 pm (UTC)Some of the ffnet summaries are just so wonderfully weird - S2C reads them for the fun of it!
How is life? Are the new students getting settled in now? Any news on the house-front?

Date: 07/10/2011 07:46 pm (UTC)House - arrrrrgh. I know I need to start looking again properly, but there's very little coming on to the market right now - if things haven't sold over the summer, either there's something very unappealing about them or in general the vendors are taking them off to try again in the spring - and I am really struggling to summon up the emotional energy to try again, having been so badly knocked back. Every time I ought to phone estate agents I procrastinate by going and writing a MEFA review instead...

Date: 07/10/2011 10:24 pm (UTC)Here's hoping the right house turns up soon - and I am nasty enough to hope that no-one speaks to the person who has moved into 'your' house.
I find visiting the MEFAs is a very good way to procrastinate, too.

Date: 08/10/2011 08:46 pm (UTC)[Nods] I used to be a health care librarian before my current post and looked after lots of mature female nursing students who just came in to do a Nurse Prescribing module. I suspect the library staff at Keyll Darree will be well used to dealing with mature students who did their first nursing degree some time ago, and it's hardly as if you'll need help on the technological side!
Right, back to some more MEFA-procrastination...
