curiouswombat: (notes from a small island)
[personal profile] curiouswombat
We got home from WriterCon UK and our visit to [livejournal.com profile] gillo's a little under two hours ago. We had a great time at both. Both make it into the pics of the week, and I will post more about both over the next few days, but first, here are the pics for Monday August 10th to Sunday August 16th - and include our wedding-cake hill, Ramsey in bloom and an amazing hat.

Monday - as usual I spent the afternoon doing a clinic at the hospital - it was late by the time I finished - and the full porters' wheelchair park caught my eye.

365 week 24 Monday

Tuesday - work took me south - I watched this young herring gull striding back and forth on the wall at Castletown -

365 week 24 Tuesday

Wednesday - I was in Ramsey and I thought the hanging baskets on the Town Hall were really impressive -

365 week 24 Wednesday

Thursday - I could have done with the day off to pack - but no such luck! However I passed through the village of St Johns and it occurred to me that I am almost half way through the year and I haven't put up a picture of Tynwald Hill - at least I don't think I have...

Tynwald Hill is the place where all our laws must be read out in Manx, to anyone who wishes to go and hear, on July 5th - without this they are not law.

The hill has had soil brought to it from each sheading (political division of the island) and the wedding cake shape is so that chairs can be put onto each circle for the members of the House of Keys, Deemsters, and so on to sit whilst the laws are read.

365 week 24 Thursday

Friday morning we were up very early - we had to be at the Sea Terminal by 7a.m. We sailed to Liverpool on the Manannan, a fast-craft - and were in Coventry by just after 1p.m. It was lovely to see friends old and new, and [livejournal.com profile] hesadevil gave me my 'pass it forward' gift - a beautiful shawl, with a ring and pin fastening, that she knitted for me -

365 week 24 Friday

The picture shows it on the bed in our hotel room.

The hotel had a brilliant 'chill-out' area where we gathered to drink coffee and eat muffins - here is [livejournal.com profile] kazzy_cee chilling out!

365 week 24 Saturday

We also chilled out with the odd glass of wine, but the pic was taken at coffee break. The giant chairs were a big, big, hit!

Sunday - we had a meeting, a raffle (Yay! I got a beautiful book of Tolkien related art!) Then, as people started to go for trains, we transferred ourselves to [livejournal.com profile] gillo's car - and went, with a few others, for a tour of Kenilworth Castle where [livejournal.com profile] gillo gave us a personally guided tour. I have lots of lovely pictures of the castle - but both [livejournal.com profile] gillo and [livejournal.com profile] quinara said that pic of the day had to be this wonderful American tourist in the hat!

365 week 24 Sunday

Her floral cart-wheel of a hat just drew our eyes - we couldn't help it!

I have my talk to post, chapter nineteen of Brotherhood to post, lots of pics to post... I should be around a lot over the next few days - as long as work doesn't wear me out tomorrow!

Thank you - I have sorted the code fault - I didn't see it on the preview! How stupid is that?

Your laws and customs are fascinating.

The shawl is a beautiful gift and I would love one of those chairs. Congrats on winning the book.

We just have a few very old laws that have just kept going!

The shawl is lovely - and Kazzy was tempted to smuggle one of the chairs out and take it home - on her Smart Car... it would have looked like a tortoise!

What a wonderful week, sounds like! Hope the coming one is similarly lovely :) .

OMG that hat! And with those pants! My eyes! My eyes!

At least her hat co-ordinates! ::Grumble:: I wanted to go to the castle with all of you. Damn my trigger-happy Ebay finger and the vast cabinets that needed collecting!

The whole outfit co-ordinated - in an amazingly horrific way!

Did you get the cabinets sorted?

It was good to meet you at writercon. Great picture of the chairs! I had heard about the hat - but words did not do it justice. Thank you for the visual!

I didn't notice hthe hat lady's
trousers
pants at the time, but they are pretty spectacular too!

Nice pics. I particularly like Karen in the special chair!

The pants were an integral part of the ensemble - but the hat did, really draw the eye.

i like that picture of Karen too.

Oooh, lovely pics as always... how wonderful that you have that tradition of reading out the laws in Manx. Those kinds of things seem to be going by the wayside more and more these days.

And the US tourist in the hat... er, wow. I'm at a loss...

Thank you - we all get the day off on July 5th, in case we want to go and hear the reading of the laws!

The hat just caught our eyes - and then we had difficulty dragging them away from it!

Those are nice hanging baskets and that is indeed quite the hat.

From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
The baskets are beautiful - there are other nice flowers around the town, too.

The most amazing thing about the hat is that the brim was formed by a circle of wire with the floral fabric stretched across it - so it tended to wobble and sway as she walked too. Practical though!

Wonderful pics. The wheelchairs look very forelorn and the seagull is really strutting his stuff.

I'm pleased you like the shawl.

Finally, the pic of the breakout room cried out to be made into a cartoon.

If I'm ever on the Isle of Man on July 5, I'm making it a point to spend at least a little time listening to the laws being read out in Manx, just because. (And I want one of those chairs!) Nice to see you back at lj and, as always, loved the photos. Glad you had a good time at the con!

It's nice to be back. There is a fair at Tynwald as well, and entertainments - they might have changed over the years but are still there.

Looks wonderful! I hope to join you all next year; I would have made it this year except for my trip to see Kat in America in thirteen days! I didn't know that the soil was brought to Tynwald; makes sense!

Glad you had a good time.

It was really good. You would have enjoyed it, I'm sure.

Next year is likely to be in the same venue, so not too difficult to get too, either.

Lovely pics! That shawl is my favorite color--sort of a warm red, coralish. You will be beautiful in it. Kaz is a long drink of water, isn't she? Where are pics of YOU, ma'am?

The shawl is lovely. Karen is somewhere between 5'10" and 6.00'- and is the shortest in her household!

As for pics of me - if you go here at the WriterCon UK journal (http://community.livejournal.com/writerconuk/84795.html#cutid1) there is a group photo - I am in bright turquiose-blue so difficult to miss!

Oh Lordy! :) I look half cut! I'd only had coffee....!!

I love those hanging baskets - they are very splendid.

I'm very concerned for the American lady - she obviously found the day chilly - everyone else is in T shirts!!

You look happy, and as if you are enjoying yourself - and I did point out it was only coffee time... :~P

The American lady did stand out somewhat!

Hat lady may become an abiding memory for those of us who went to the castle!

Taking different pictures is reasonably easy, simply because my job takes me all over the island - and the odd trip off-island helps too.

Lovely picture of Karen, and those chairs do look absolutely perfect for lolling around in.

Quick question - do they read out all your laws or just the new ones that have been passed in the year?

Date: 24/08/2009 05:03 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
I am really pleased with the picture of Karen.

Only new laws need reading out on July 5th - thank goodness, or they'd go on for ever!
