Well, I got home on Sunday evening, but my laptop decided it could no longer, under any circumstances, go online. Fortunately I had a spare...(as per entry of August 24th - yes it has taken me that long to actually start using my new laptop!)

So yesterday saw my ever-patient husband spend ages trying to persuade the Vaio to go online, and longer ages doing most of the transferring of stuff from the Vaio to the new HP one for me.

He is going to do the nit-picking on the final chapter of Return of the Key for me tonight too - so that will be posted tomorrow.

In the meantime, under the cut are

Pictures of the lovely place my friend and I stayed -

Iona cottage

The little cottage at this end of the picture, in the beautiful gardens below, was all mine! We had one each.

Garden

Each cottage had a bedroom -

Bedroom 2

a bathroom -

and my own little sitting room -

Sitting room

We ate wonderfully, most memorable were local prawns wrapped in local smoked salmon, quail stuffed with haggis, and duck breast in a plum sauce.

The whole area had been very heavily rained on for days - so this is Culzean Castle with it's rather soggy gardens -

Culzean House

Culzean grounds

We went up towards New Galloway, and passed Clatteringshaws Reservoir - this shows the run-off over the dam -

Clatteringshaws dam

and this shows the water level above the dam - yes, those are trees in the water!

The drive home had its moments - petrol got very low as most local garages in that part of Scotland don't open before 10.00am on Sundays! Carlisle had a detour which was not well signposted, and went round so many times it felt like a corkscrew, but I did, eventually, end up on the right road, pointing in the right direction, and was down at the boat at 1pm as planned.

Off to a church meeting tonight - it is raining here, too.

That first picture, and the last, makes me think of Five Red Herrings which takes place in that part of West Scotland. I've always wanted to go there, but the closest we got is a luggage factory outlet somewhere near Kilmarnock.

Julia, someday, I hope, when the current set of barriers are overcome

Oh, it is such a long time since I read that, that I had forgotten. Must put it on my Christmas list!

Wonderful place for a rather romantic break. Took me almost seven hours from York, but I avoided the motorways and used the A roads all the way. I was presented with afternoon tea when I arrived, and we ate dinner there each night, and were totally spoilt!

oooh, that's gorgeous! May have to send that link to Kieran. We want to see more of Scotland anyway!

Wow - you certainly had some rain!! The cottage looked really comfy though.

The cottage was wonderful, and it is a lovely area. Long way to drive for you though!

The icon is much further north in Scotland.

The food was wonderful. There was also baked cod, a blackcurrant creme brulée, baked apples with home made ice-cream...

The food was excellent - and the breakfasts were stupendous, too - home made fruit salad, cereal, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms. eggs etc. cooked any way you wanted, toasted home-made bread...

Weirdly, I don't seem to have put any weight on!

I loved those breakfasts. They fed us like that in all the Irish hotels we visited on our trip around that island.

Back in the states you're lucky to get a cup of bad coffee and a stale doughnought unless you're paying upwards of US$250 a night (US$250 = £1.39, approximately).

I had cereal, fruit, bacon, sausage and a poached egg, a slice of toast - and then only coffee and a small piece of cake until evening! Good value for sure.

Sounds like a fun trip-- what a cute little inn!

quail stuffed with haggis

Really? And it was good? I can see "memorable", but good?

Looking forward to the next chapter!

What gorgeous pictures. The castle is like something from a fairy tale.

The cottage looked very clean and comfy- that's such a pretty shade of blue on the couch.

The food sounds interesting- I've never had quail eggs. Are they anything like hen eggs?

Date: 14/10/2008 08:22 pm (UTC)

Quail eggs are quite like hen eggs, but tiny. But in this case it was the birds themselves we had stuffed with haggis - and they were really, really tasty!

These are lovely. Thanks for sharing.

At first glance I thought that was a telephone in the shower... that's not a telephone is it?

Date: 14/10/2008 08:23 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
No - it is a power shower - that is the small electric unit that heats and pumps the water! Does look like a phone, though.

It was really nice. We can see the Mull of Galloway from my mother's place, so it was interesting to actually visit.

Totally recommend the place we stayed if you want a quiet break for just the two of you.

Thanks. There was an awful lot of water - one of the lochs had similar trees shoulder deep in water, but there was nowhere to stop to take pictures.

It is a lovely place to stay, we were totally coddled! And we spent some time in Castle Douglas and found a really good butcher's, so I brought a really good haggis home, and a real old-fashioned shoe shop where I bought some trouser boots.

Absolutely gorgeous pictures - wish I was there right now. Thanks so much for posting these. Love you own little cottage.

But how sad is it that when I read your subject line, my eyes saw "Galloway", but my mind registered "Gallifrey". Fandom is definitely taking over my life! *snorf*

The back of that castle is on the very, very edge of the cliff - so the gulf stream and the proximity of the sea keeps the climate equitable! D&G is actually quite close to us, we have the gulf stream effect too.

I'm glad you had a fun (if wet) time. When I spoke to my mum last weekend she said the weather had been pretty abysmal up that way.

I bet S2C is glad to have you back, though.

It was decidedly damp - but didn't really affect the enjoyment.

Scotland is beautiful - both the lowlands and the highlands, and very different from England.
