I'm off work today - simply to keep my annual leave form tidy! I am going away on the boat tomorrow with the car so that I can drive to York and help Daughter-dear pack her stuff, move most of it to her new house, and bring her and quite a bit of stuff home again on Monday. This required 4 days leave, so I added today to keep it in nice units of 5!

Our weather is breezy - well down-right windy for the time of year, but at least whilst we have had more rain than ever before for June so far, we aren't flooded like so much of mainland Britain. Climate worldwide is most definitely changing - it should be warm and calm with the odd shower in June - not blowing a gale and flooding places, or drought-like as I know it is in parts of the US. Whether you believe that it is a man-made change or not, it is now hard to ignore the fact that weather is becoming exaggerated! Wetter, drier, windier, hotter, cooler; no-one just has totally average weather year-round any more!

Fortunately D-d's part of York is not exactly flooded there are just 10ft wide puddles - actually York is less flooded than it sometimes is, as far as I can tell! Also fortunately it looks as if the parts of Yorkshire badly flooded are all south of my travel-route - sigh of relief!

Anyway, I have been out making sure all my pots in the garden are well-watered, as S2C rarely ever thinks to water them if I am away. I hope most of them survive! Under the cut are a few pictures of what is now in flower -

Sweet peas - I think a little earlier than last year, but not a lot in it.

And those are 'miniature trailing sweet peas' - at least that is what the nursery called them, although I think more 'miniature' than 'trailing' - they look as if they would still much prefer to go up than down. I've forgtten what the little peachy thing at the top is!

I hadn't tried to grow anything in those plastic bag things before - it works quite well, but is not quite as pretty as my manger baskets.

You can see it in the foreground, beside the mangers - they are doing well, except for the plant in the wall of the first one - which has almost died - I think because it was competing for root space with that geranium, which has gone mad!

This is my 'Conservancy' patio rose - which is beautiful this year.

And these two little baskets I planted with tiny plug pansies - each was about 3 leaves in April -

The eagle-eyed amongst you will spot some odd leaves in there - there is a small fuchsia in each one too - but they aren't flowering yet.

Finally - these are our defunct aluminium steps - which are now creating a bit of height in the corner near the table.

<Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I am persuading the ivy from the wall to climb up the sides of the steps too.

As I am taking the car with me I will take my laptop, but probably won't be on-line a lot, as
I have to pay by the hour at the hotel!

So, so pretty. And do I spot a little bit of sun on those pretties? I hardly remember what it looks like...

*glares at sky*

Have you been spared the storms that hit Britain?

Yes - it has been sunny for a few hours today, and yesterday. But it is windy, and as it is a north wind it has meant it is not as warm as usual - only about 14-15C.

We have not had the heavy rain - we were just far enough from the centre of the area of low pressure - just a few heavy showers.

Very pretty!

Sorry to hear about the rain. It seems to be an odd year other places-- by which I mean "Other places than here"! Here it's sunny and 70 which is what it should be in late June!

Normal weather seems to be something of a rarity! I've had friends in Kansas flooded and friends in Michigan complaining about drought.

It should be sunny and 70 here too.....but it's blustery and about 58F instead. ;~(

::Hopes for sunshine next week::

The weather really is unseasonal isn't it!! We have only just come out of a hosepipe ban from last year, and this year they were saying that we may have to have one again.... I think not!! *stares at waterlogged garden!!*

I love your trailing sweetpeas - what great colours!

The trailing sweetpeas came fromThompson & Morgan (http://www.thompson-morgan.com/en). I also grow ordinary sweetpeas, from the supermarket, in pots with canes and they do really well - but you never hear anyone suggesting them as a 'patio plant' on garden programmes. I love the scent - the trailing ones aren't quite as scented but so pretty.

The flooding in Sheffield made the news over here. And I have a manger basket as well which hangs on the brickwork of my front porch next to the stairs. It is currently filled with "Million Bells" aka Calibracoa.

And I forgot to say how lovely your Sweet Peas are.

Gosh - I must tell D-d that Sheffield's flooding made your news - it is close to York and she has friends who are at university there - but their term had already finished, luckily for them! Well, unless they go back in October and find that any stuff they left behind has all been underwater. :~(

My manger baskets are on the incredibly ugly wall of next-door's garage, which is the boundary wall. One year I am going to paint that wall - a nice blue maybe?

The sweetpeas grow really well - I buy them as tiny seedlings, then put them in pots with something to climb up, and let them go! The trailing ones are something new to me, and they are in one of those vertical grow-bag things, which was ugly until they grew a good bit, but is fine now that it is just a column of flowers.

Pretty!

Good luck on your trip. Hope you're not prone to seasickness.

I'm not too bad and I think I might have some sea-sickness tablets somewhere - I'll have a look before I go to bed.

Your flowers are looking lovely, particuarly the sweetpeas.

I have one sweetpea, which was in a hanging basket, but had to be removed for trying to crowd out every single other thing. I've moved it into a flowerbed and it's gone into a sulk and refused to flower.

I started growing sweetpeas in pots almost by accident - D-d loves them, and wanted us to try. Then I found that they do quite well.

I get a tray of seedlings from the supermarket, bung them in about 4 or 5 to a pot, and give them a few things to hang onto to get started. Then they just hang onto each other in a sort of colourful clump.

My Uncle Nelson would be most unimpressed by this - his grew in a tight regimented fashion up criss-crossed canes with twine, and were 'encouraged' to produce beautiful long stemmed blooms for showing.

You'll just have to give yours a strict talking too!

The seet peas are lovely. Mine isn't out yet. I say 'mine' - it's one of the escapees from next door's garden. Are yours scented?

Best wishes for a calm crossing.

The small trailing ones have very little scent to be honset, but the big ones, from the local Co-op, are beautifully scented.

The wind has calmed down at the moment - but the shipping forcast still says it is going to be moderate to rough! We'll see. Sometimes i think it would be much better if they just towed us up and tethered us the the Mull of Galloway like the Rev Audrey did in the Thomas books! (His Sodor was based on us - the bishopric is that of Sodor and Man, except that Sodor as such doesn't exist, so he invented it.)

Your flowers are lovely. I have flower envy. His Lordship has tomato plants growing, but we are flower-less.

Have fun on your vacation!

Thank you. It is something of a working holiday - it is the end of D-d's first year at uni, and she is due home for 3 months. This requires Mum and the car to bring the stuff she need home. And also to move all the other stuff from her university house to the privately rented one they have for the next two years.

Fortunately I am taking the big car, officially S2C's although he just lets me drive him around in it, because the boot of poor little Po would be overflowing!

Your garden pictures are wonderful, as always. I had been thinking about D-d and wondering if York was affected by the flooding. Good luck in your travels. I hope the rain subsides.

Thank you. I love my tiny garden with all its pots of things.

York has been reasonably unflooded - bits have been under a few inches of water but only because the drains couldn't take the volume. As far as I know the rivers have not burst their banks.

D-d says that the lake on main campus overflowed, and the ducks were swimming on the sports pitches, but the walkways were mostly passable in wellies!

If it gets very wet I'll wear my crocs with no socks and roll up my trousers!

Flowers look pretty! The rain has encouraged weeds to take over my garden and baby doesn't give me chance to pull them up. *g* Some of them are getting pretty tall.

I have to admit it's been nice having this cooler weather, no flooding where I am and although lots of rain and wind it seems to calm down during the day. I have to admit I haven't been far though. :)

From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
I do still get the odd weed coming up between the paving slabs, but it is much easier to look after without the grass and flower beds!

More prone to flooding perhaps, but then I live half way down a steep hill, so any water should just rush on past.

How are you and baby? I can see that cooler might be better.

Date: 26/06/2007 10:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] samson28.livejournal.com
Being in Norfolk we don't have that many hills for water to rush down! I wish I had slabs, lots of grass to be kept short and flower beds - concrete sounds nice around now.

We're fine, the cooler weather means I can go out more and not worry about little one. She is such a hot little baby that she cooks in the hot weather. She's now 14 weeks old and getting big at 13lb! I'll try and post some photos soon.

Have a nice time with your dd. Not too much paddling. :)

I hope you'll have time to mix some pleasure with the business of moving.

I love pansies. I planted two large clumps this spring, and they are just about finished with the heat. When I go on vacation next week, they will probably perish.

I wonder if sweet peas would like the heat any better? Your rose is gorgeous!

Date: 27/06/2007 06:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com
The rose bush is so tiny! It is a 'patio rose' so the entire bush is only about 24" tall.

The sweet peas would probably be OK as long as they got watered regularly - the ones in the pots in the sunnier area of the garden grow much faster than the ones in the areas which only get sun for an hour or two. The sunny-side ones are about 40" tall and still going, the shady ones are still only about 24", so the sun seems to help.

We're having an unusually dry June -- apparently you're getting our rain. I don't mind not mowing the lawn, but everyone's starting to worry about the corn crop. Hopefully the storms that came through last night send down enough rain to keep the crops going for awhile.

Love the pics!

On the news last night they were showing birds swimming in the wheat fields about 50 miles from where I am at the moment, and a pumpkin field with a heron trying to fish in it!

Pity we can't just average it all out between Indiana and Yorkshire!

Whenever water is spilled on the ground around here, you can *hear* it soaking in. Yep -- an average would be great.
