This is just a little note to say how proud I am of my niece - the one usually referred to as 'Slightly-Goth-Niece'. She is the same age as D-d to a week - so was 19 in April. She works in a local financial institution belonging to one of the Big Banks, suffers painfully with excema and is also asthmatic. She is also a party-animal, and no shrinking violet!

But SGN has just achieved something which is locally regarded as a major thing - she has taken part in the famous Parish Walk. This is a walk which takes in every parish church on the island, and in its entirety is 85 miles long - but only about 150 of the 1,100 or so starters manage to cover the whole course - in fact as an under 21 SGN would only have been allowed to go to St German's, at 32.5 miles. The winner covered the course in under 16 hours.

SGN set herself the task of getting to Santon - 11 miles, but actually made it to Rushen - a walk of 19 miles.

She was being sponsored to raise money for our local hospice, where my sister works, and she raised about £120.

And I have looked at about 600 pictures of the walk on the official website - and I can't see her in any of them!

I was totally impressed. If she'd got to Santon I'd have been impressed!

Isn't it? I've never really thought of her as an athlete!

Very nice. At our local festival, there is always a five-mile run, two-mile run, children's road races, and two-mile walk. My niece is a marathoner, so she easily handles the five-mile run. This was the first year that Bojoette joined my sister-in-law and another niece for the two-mile walk. I should make it a goal to be in the two-mile walk next year. Bojoette is aiming for the run, whether it be two or five.

Nineteen miles is excellent for an asthmatic. Nineteen miles is excellent for anyone!

You have a lovely island.

A two mile walk sounds like a good aim.

You have a lovely island.

Thank you - and if anyone completes the Parish Walk they see all of it! It is something first done as a wager many years ago - to touch the door of every Parish Church, on foot, within 24 hours. So although it now has a field of well over 1,000 (more than half local, but others from all over the world, who hear about it and decide to take part). But you are still timed for each section by touching the doors of the churches!

I am amazed to think that people could cover 85 miles in 24 hours. Marathoners only cover 26 miles!

Isn't it neat? I am more impressed with Em getting 19 miles than the winner, a regular race walker, doing the 85 miles in under 16 hours.

I am well impressed by her - I'd be lucky to do the 2 miles between the first two churches!

I walked to the town council meeting and back today -- but it was only about two miles, total, and that includes a two hour rest between walking there and walking back.

Isn't it good? I didn't even know that she was going to do it, until my mother asked if I knew whether she had made it to the start line - and I was all 'What! I didn't know!' - and when I asked my sister and she said how far she'd got I stumped up £10 even though I wasn't on the original sponsor form!
