I've just mnaged to book a hotel for us to stay in York when I/we take D-d to university. Meep! Almost every hotel was already booked solid - I don't know if this is simply becuase it is back to uni. weekend, or whether there is something else happening that weekend, but with a list of '77 hotels in York' I typed in my dates, and it reduced to 5; 1 of which was very expensive, and two more than five miles out!

So I went to my trusty Travel Inn site (now Premier Travel Inn) - and booked one of the last available rooms in the York City Centre one for the long weekend - whew!

This means that S2C can still come if he wants to, or not if he decides to stay home with the cat, as the room has a double, and a pull out single for the night or two that D-d will be there rather than in hall.

Good job I didn't leave it whilst he decided whether to come, and she found out whether she will be in a hall that is available on the Saturday, or one where you can't move in until Sunday - or we'd have been looking for a stable!

Oh, bother; I could have given you the names of two very good B&Bs in Rekall, which is about ten minutes south of York. It's always hard to find a hotel room there, according to Dr. Manners, who travels there a lot (and has good contacts for the local B&Bs as a result).

Julia, should get some use out of the business cards I carry around.

Ha! I should have mentioned it sooner! Actually, we will be backwards and forwards over the next few years, so if you do find them, do let me know. The Travel Inn will be clean, and quite adequate for four days, but somewhere else would be nice for another trip!

I was most relieved - it hadn't occured to me, until I looked, that it might be difficult!

Hi. I just discovered your site and read TYA. I never thought I would even read Spike/Dawn, let alone find it comforting and hot! Thanks.

I expect every parent of a child has the same plans as you and perhaps that explains the hotel situation? Tent might have worked ... LOL!!

Thank you - it's my pleasure. the follow up is slowly, slowly, under production! I won't start to put it up until I have enough og it to be well ahead to start with.

I'm guessing that's why, as well. I never thought of the tent - D-d does have a three-man one - we could have pitched it on the grass beside the Minster.....

There might be races going on - race weekends mean that the city gets very, very busy. I'd have thought it was a little late in the year for a race meet, but there seem to be more and more of them this year!

Never thought of that - I will have to remember to check anytime we might drop over to visit.

Funnily enough, I live very near where you're staying! So drop me a line if you have any issues with places to eat etc etc (not sure if you're that familiar with the city!).

Further advice - on moving in day, I would advise getting up there early - earlier than they say you're allowed in to the accommodation - if you want to get a parking bay anywhere near where her accommodation is! I remember arriving an hour early to move in... And the car park was already very, very busy. One you know which college she's in, feel free to ask & I'll see if I can think of any particularly good places to put yourself! :)

I feel quite excited on D-d's behalf... Makes me nostalgic for the day I started university, though I'm certainly glad I'm not an undergrad anymore!

We know the middle of the city fairly well - I renewed my acquaintance with it last September, when I attended a conference at the university myself, and took D-d with me as my guest for the three days. We ate one night at Guy Fawkes birthplace, up bhy the Minster, and at Pastiche, on Lendal another night - and Pizza Hut!

I might well ask for your advice closer to the day though, and advice on getting the stuff into the college is very welcome. Thanks for the hint about getting in early - we arrive the day before, so we can go and claim a parking space early, and take a book or two - or just park the car and get the bus back into town!!

Kat has chosen her modules now, and sent the forms back - the only problem she had was that she wanted to do 13 of the 15 choices in one section and all but two in the next section, and so on - she thinks she could do with doing her degree three times around to study all she wants, and envies friends who are starting a couple of weeks earlier because she really wants to start!

Ah, that's a sensible plan!

I'm glad you found a place to stay. There's rarely that problem here, but that's probably because so many of the students who go to University live within driving distance.
