A few pictures to illustrate the week.

Actually the first one is from last Sunday. It was the church AGM - and like most such, it is necessary, but not a lot of people want to be bothered attending. So we have the bribe of a free lunch... home made soup, with bread, and dessert - under the cut is a picture of the pudding as it was very pretty.

Raspberry meringue

Aren't our church plates neat?

On Tuesday I was on my way to do a couple of home visits down south, and stopped in Castletown to eat my sandwich lunch.

This is the view across the harbour to the castle -

Castle Rushen and harbour

Now... a couple of months ago, the subject for the week on [livejournal.com profile] photo_scavenger was 'time'. And [livejournal.com profile] cairistiona7 posted a picture of a clock in the USA that reminded me of the Millennium clocks in a couple of our towns and villages. So I posted a picture of one of them - here. I mentioned that there seemed to have been a very efficient salesman as there were certainly more of them around just like that one.

Look closely at that picture of Castle Rushen and see if you can spot another one of the Millennium clocks.

Here's a clue...

Castletown Millennium Clock

Wednesday evening and my sister e-mailed me with the news of my niece's engagement - a nice thing. But it must have distracted me because within ten minutes of getting that news I had managed to break the catch on the back gate when I went to take the bin in, and then snap the handle on one of the kitchen cupboards!

The cupboards have been there for about 15 or 16 years - S2C fitted them himself. So getting a matching handle was not an option. I must admit that a couple of times I have thought that new handles would 'modernise' the whole kitchen, but I never got further than a vague thought. But now it has to be done - because one odd handle would look very odd. So I have been to B&Q and bought 14 new handles... 13 to use, and a spare.

I have taken a picture showing the first new handle in place, replacing the broken one, with the old one on the next cupboard -

The old handle is on the right, the shiny new stainless steel one is on the left.

New handle

It's going to take us a while to do all of those...

It was a tiring week at work because I had another nurse with me - and somehow explaining what you are doing, as you do it, is twice as tiring as doing it - even though I do really quite enjoy explaining, too. So,; the last clinic of the week was on Friday, in Ramsey. The other nurse headed back south when we finished, but I was meeting friends for an early evening dinner in Ramsey.

I thought I would sit and read for half an hour before going to meet them - and I managed to fall asleep! Just shows it was a tiring week. I was only about 15 minutes late, thankfully, and had a very nice meal at The Harbour Bistro. Had I been more alert I would have taken a picture of my rum-flavoured creme caramel so that this post would be bookended by puddings - but sadly I forgot...

I enjoyed reading your update. I don't know why I enjoy hearing about food so much (maybe because I love making sure hobbits get enough of it), butI always like it when folks share their lunch, etc. experiences. :)

Oooh! Raspberry meringue - love it!

Your new handles are very smart - they'll definitely jazz up the kitchen a bit. It's wonderful how a small change can make the whole room look fresh :-)

I've had weeks like that - where it just didn't pay to sit down between events because I might sleep right through the next one. :)

It's easy to see how Castletown got its name. :) Great pics, as always.

Very chic new handles! The whole kitchen will feel new.

I sympathise with the falling asleep - I've just spent the evening getting sorted for the boys going back to school and us back to work tomorrow (book bags, water bottles, PE kit, plimsolls, packed lunches, clean the shoes, etc etc...) and am rather regretting sitting down now since I shall have to get up again and I'm not sure I can...

Hope this week will be less strenuous for you!

Those are very spiffy kitchen cupboard handles! And very nice church plates.

Our City clock looks like this (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/wurmiebaby/media/where%20i%20live/81610epclocktower.jpg.html?sort=3&o=310).

Oddly enough, was discussing kitchen cupboard handle replacements only this week! We were agreeing that one-holed handles are much easier to replace, so well done for finding a suitable replacement. And they are very nice indeed. Much snazzier!

Nothing is harder work than being on show all the time. My inspections (which are mostly just chatting in offices) leave me incredibly drained, though they rarely last more than three hours. I used always to plan the London ones for mornings so I could take a half day and do something nice like go to an exhibition. Don't think I *ever* did it, in reality.

I rather like making sure my hobbits eat well, too, when they crop up in my stories - and almost always things that I know and love myself!

It occurred to me that my boozy blackberries (I make blackberry brandy - which is the same concept as sloe gin - and the fruit sitting in the bottom of the kilner jars is remarkably good...) would be excellent with meringue and cream - I must give it a try.

I'll take a picture when we get all the handles on - although there is no rush so it might take some time!

I agree, the church plates are quite nice, as does the pudding placed on it. You really live in such a lovely part of the world :-)

It's easy to see how Castletown got its name.

Not a lot of imagination going on there, was there? And the other town with a noticeable castle is known by it's English name of Peel - from Peel, or Pele, Tower (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peel_tower). Its Gaelic, so older, name is Purt ny Hinshey which means the port with the island - almost as prosaic, but a little more interesting!

Hope this week will be less strenuous for you! - And you!

And yes, I think being spurred into doing the handles really will give the kitchen a whole new look.

I do love the idea that, at some time, we actually got crockery with the church name on it.

Your clock is very different - and very, very, smart.

You are absolutely right about the one-holed handles. The choice of new handles was limited by which ones were the right size to fit the existing holes - I was really pleased to find ones I liked that fitted.

I must admit that it will be quite nice, this week, to just do things, and be able to listen to radio 4 in the car rather than explaining why I just did what I did, or what we are doing next - even though I do find passing on what i know in my specialism really rather rewarding.

I do wonder under what circumstances we actually got those plates - they've been there for a very long time; these days any new crockery is just plain blue.

You really live in such a lovely part of the world :-)

I really appreciate it more since I began posting pictures of it here.

I love the castle. And the pudding - I wish I had one now. :) Raspberries are in top 3 of my favorite fruits. Actually, when I think of it, I think they're no 1. :)

I like raspberries, too - but if I make something like that dessert I would have to do some with strawberries as S2C doesn't like rasps :(

The raspberry meringue made me drool. I used to have them growing in my garden, and it was wonderful to just go out and eat them straight from the canes. The church china is rather charming. The new handles for the kitchen cabinets will make a dramatic difference, very smart and modern. And...having perused the menu for The Harbour Bistro I have to ask, what are Queenies? They seem to feature quite a lot. I'm feeling hungry after looking at all those food suggestions, so I think it is time now to go and have a nice bowl of Weetbix!

Queenies are queen scallops (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_scallop) - smaller than the usual scallops and 'sweeter'. They are very much a local speciality.

D-d and S2c are big fans - I'll eat them, but there are a lot of things I like more...
