I do seem to be rather behind myself with the festive season this year.
However, D-d came around last night and we do now have the tree up and decorated, to go with the decorations I had already put up.
There was a brief moment of panic when we realised that one strand of the tree lights no longer worked - then I found the spare net of lights, only to remember that instead of plain lights on a green background they are coloured ones on a white net.
D-d unsure about this - it is not 'traditional' - we always have plain lights - well for as long as she can remember, and the white wiring will be too obvious. She is not good with change! However once the tinsel and all the familiar ornaments were on she decided it did look fine. We think we may go back to plain next year though.
pondhopper, and others, have been talking about their old familiar decorations. Our tree, at first sight, looks rather too well matched - lots of red, gold, and glass. But so many of the decorations do have memories attached - here is the very first glass ornament, bought in a shop long since closed, and something of an extravagance, whilst this one came from
dougalsservant, as did that, another we bought when we first went to York taking D-d to university, another couple came from Hexham Abbey, some others made by a friend from church, and so on!
Then there is Archbishop Sentamu, and a meerkat wearing a Christmas jumper, both gifts from D-d...
I'll take a picture or two sometime in the next couple of days. And only one more day at work and then I'm off for two whole weeks - hurrah!
But I am still writing cards and letters, still haven't finished the Christmas baking and sweet making to give for gifts, haven't wrapped a single present... Meep!
However, I followed the recommendation of
spikereader and have made the Nigella chocolate fruit cake, rather than our traditional one, and it is in the oven, and there is a tray of mince pie fudge cooling in the kitchen - so at least the house smells festive right now!
Thank you to so many friends who have sent cards - these are all on display and look very festive. If I've managed to not send you one, please don't take it as a personal insult - I got about half done before S2C took ill, and then lost track of which had been written and posted and which hadn't.
