Manx Accent - and Olympics.
15 Feb 2010 09:59 pmThere was a definite Manx accent - it was a lovely, slow, sound - not Irish, or Scottish, or Cornish but, just as clearly, one that had developed from Gaelic. I don't have it - very few people under 70 do.
But there is, most decidedly, a 'Young Manx' accent - my daughter has it and so do her friends. So, too, do most other young islanders under the age of 25 or 30.
If you want to know how it sounds just listen to Olympic snowboarder Zoe Gillings!
Actually you'll also hear it when you hear interviews with top racing cyclist Mark Cavendish - although both Mark and Zoe represent Britain they are Manx, and neither has lost that 'Young Manx' accent at all!
