WriterConUK
27 May 2009 07:50 pmThis is a pimping post!
I have just signed S2C and I up for this year's WriterConUk meeting, and realise that I have friends who do not know about it, but may be interested.
WriterConUK began in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom, as a response to the number of times people read about friends in the US going to Writercon and thought 'That would be fun - if it wasn't so far away.
The first proper 'midimeet' was a couple of years ago, and all the writers, readers and artists involved were from the Buffy and Angelverse. There were about 20-odd of us, and it was great to meet people face to face that had only been pen-names on LJ before. There were quizzes, a raffle, and a whole series of talks about writing, simple manip making, how to make your LJ more readable - all sorts. I remember especially talks about writing drabbles, writing fight scenes, and coping with writer's block.
By the second midimeet (so called because there was a 'mini-meet' to get the whole thing rolling, and WriterCon US has so many more delegates - seems like hundreds!) it had become multi-fandom - some of us had branched out, and one of my new LotR friends came too (waves to
ningloreth). There was more than one male! (waves to
booster17 as well as S2C)
We had talks about research, beta-ing, use of imagery, how to use Artweaver to make icons, and lots of other things. Oh - and a really good night out together at a local restaurant in Reading.
So - this year the WriterConUK meeting for "Artists, Betas, Readers, and Writers living in Europe" is in August, in Coventry, will cost £25 per delegate, and has arranged a special rate for people staying at the conference hotel. And we get goody bags - always personalised to our own choice of fandom - and with sweeties! (Waves to
bogwitch who spends months doing the goody bags!)
For all the info go here to the community, and look at the most recent posts for all the details.
I would totally recommend attending - good company, I always learn something, and it is good to meet people. I would also say that just because the original group of 24 or so were all buffyverse people, and many of them will be coming for the third year, it is not cliquey - I think Ningloreth, who arrived only knowing me online of all the delegates, would agree.
So - friends of any fandom, whether reader or writer or artist, or all three - do think about coming to Coventry in August!
