curiouswombat: (Birthday2)
Firstly, Happy Birthday to Stormwreath, and to Deinin.

Secondly - I mentioned that we made nutty meringues in Sunday School, as an illustration of the Easter story - here I will explain. Also - this idea was not all my own work - it came from a net-based Sunday-School resource.

Take one cup of pecan nuts - put into one or more poly-bags, and allow children to beat them with a rolling pin, into small pieces. This reminds us that Jesus was beaten by the soldiers.

Take three egg whites - eggs are a symbol of new life, Easter is the time we celebrate new life, especially the new life Jesus brought us in His death and resurrection.

Add a teaspoonful of wine vinegar - Jesus was given wine vinegar when he was dying on the cross. We all tasted the vinegar. Also add a pinch of salt - salt to represent the tears of His mother and friends as He was tortured on the cross. It can also represent the idea that we are the salt of the earth. We all tasted the salt, too.

Beat gently for a few seconds to break up the egg-whites, and then add a cup of sugar. I had the sugar in a plain bag - they had to guess what it was by dipping in a finger - trusting me that I wouldn't ask them to do anything that would harm them, just as they have to trust God, and also it was something sweet that they didn't expect - which is a simplistic view of the resurrection, but it works!

Use an electric mixer and beat for 5 - 10 minutes - great fun, everyone was able to have a go!

Add the nuts, place in small spoonfuls on baking parchment and put into a pre-heated oven (300F, 150C). Shut the oven door firmly. Discuss how Jesus body was shut in the tomb.

After about 10 minutes turn off the oven, but don't take them out until another ten minutes, or more, has passed. Cool on a wire rack for a minute or two.

When you bite in you find that they are empty in the middle - just as Jesus' tomb was!

So - how to cover the Easter story with a bunch of 4 - 9 year-olds, and produce something sweet for them to take home.

D-d and I ate the meringues that I baked at home, from the mixture that had been too much for the church oven, this evening in a version of Eton Mess - and they were very good.
