Life 6; Wombat 0.
9 Feb 2009 10:36 pmOK - I give in - life wins. This is not being a good year so far for inanimate objects around the Casa del Speaker to Wombats.
How do they hate me? Let me count the ways...
So far in the last few weeks -
The oven shot sparks and flames at me, then died.
The lighting downstairs almost all went off, but a nice electrician called Derek found the fault behind one of the light fittings in the living room and fixed it - pointing out, as I already knew, that the house needs rewiring.
The other, large, glass, light fitting, (which S2C had taken down whilst trying to mend the problem himself and presumably not quite screwed back properly - the ceiling is a bit wonky) fell on the floor from the ceiling, shattered, scratched my laptop and embedded glass in my slippers. Fortunately I was at work, or it might well have embedded a lot of glass in me too.
The small car's battery died and had to be replaced.
The workmen who are laying new water-mains and cut our back lane off are meant to put our wheelie-bins where they can be collected by the binmen, as there is no access for the bin lorry, then return them - ours has gone missing so we have no bin.
This morning when I went to put some bottles in the recycle box beside our heating unit, which is outside the kitchen rather than inside it, the boiler blew just as I was right beside it, pouring very hot water out at foot level and steam out at body level. Fortunately the 'bang' made me jump and I avoided being scalded.
Still - on the good side I was not burnt by the oven, lacerated by the shattering glass, or scalded by the water and steam, my laptop was not damaged, I have new slippers, and we are able to afford to have the heating sorted out, so it could be worse...
Or is that tempting fate?
Talking about it being possible for it to be worse - you can make a donation to the Australian Red Cross by clicking here - every little will help.
