curiouswombat: (manx flag. Chris Reynolds)
I've just been watching the highlights of the opening of the Commonwealth Games. I loved the flying tram, and the fishes on the river are wonderful - they didn't show you ours, but we have a basking shark - which is absolutely right for us. Our team were fifth into the stadium, with flags waving maddly - the BBC were still talking about the team in front, and just said, 'And there was the Isle-of-Man, flag carried by Harry Creavy, a publican from Douglas,' then moved on, but our lot were definitely waving those flags!

But the best moment for me was when the young man announced that, as it was almost the Queen's 80th birthday, Dame Kiri te Kanawa was going to sing 'Happy Birthday' - the Queen looked pleased, but it was Prince Philip's reaction that brought a lump to my throat - he looked so pleased for her, and kept glancing at her, then as the song started he staggered to his feet to join in with a big smile. The old bugger looked remarkably human! Although he managed to look remarkably human whilst still looking like a tortoise!

And all those fireworks - I guess they were a belated Happy Birthday gesture to [livejournal.com profile] dalmeny!!
