Giles was applying logic - his whole approach to Spike/Dawn had been quite logical - he cares a great deal about Dawn, and realises that her immortality will make her lonely, so someone else with immortality is a good thing - Dawn and Spike, to him, have a lot in common, whereas he saw Buffy and Spike as diametric opposites. Spike's plan to rescue Dawn might have gone awry but in fact his very nature, as a vampire, is what saved her; and may well, logically, save her in future. Mhairi on the other hand doesn't use the same logic at all - she deals with feelings and hurt, both physical and psychological.
When both of them are telling Spike the same thing, he'd better believe it!
