Spike says somewhere in Ten Years After something like 'all his time as an unsouled vampire was spent as a teenager who knew that there was no-one who could make him stick to any of human society's rules. The chip made him a teenager who had to comply to some of the rules, and the soul has helped him to mature past fourteen'. He is reaching the stage where 'Spike and the demon have learnt to live together' to slightly misquote S2C's wonderful vampire Jack Robson.
