State of the wombat

I don't seem to have written much about life in general here for a little while.

It has been proceeding. I wrote about my day on Wednesday in [livejournal.com profile] monthlydiaryday here - it was a fairly ordinary day.

I have written about 6,000 words for my Back to Middle Earth Month story - but I can't post it here yet (or any of the other places I post stories), as it hasn't been revealed on the community yet. It has slowed down the next chapter of The Valinor Trail, but that is under way now, and the B2ME story is a Returnverse tale as well.

Yesterday D-d and I went up to Mum's and took her for lunch for the first time in a couple of months, as her arthritis and gout have been playing up so badly she hasn't felt like coming out. Then we took her for an optician's appointment. Fortunately the disabled parking space outside the opticians was available, and she had her rollator, so this went fairly smoothly.

The optician is, however, very worried about the blind spot that has developed in the middle of Mum's right eye (which was why she made the appointment), so she is asking Mum's GP to refer her to the ophthalmologist. It is one of the vagaries of our local services that the consultant ophthalmologist will only take referrals from doctors, not opticians.

My sister told me today that Slightly-goth niece has just been told she is to be made redundant later this year, a month or so before her wedding.

Brits who have been hearing so much stuff on the news about whether Big Banks will stay, or not stay, in Scotland if it becomes independent, will be somewhat amused, or possibly bemused, by the fact that this is because 'Barclays Wealth and Investment Management' are transferring her entire department's work to Glasgow.

Also - I've just been at our fortnightly on-line meeting to organise WriterConUK's event this year.

And people, friends of mine, if you didn't already know that this year's event will be in Coventry in September - then you do now - just GO HERE and sign up!

You get to see me! And these wonderful people - we are a really friendly bunch - why not just go for it? :)

I'm sure your Mum was happy to have an outing with you, but oh dear, that sounds like worrisome news about her eye.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2014-03-16 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It does, rather. She is resigned, herself, to not getting that sight back, already. She is coping with her left eye fairly well.

Oh, dear, I hope the referral comes through quickly so she can get it checked out properly, her eye that is!

That's the same walker my B.H. has, he doesn't need it all the time but if we are going anywhere which involves a lot of walking he finds it very handy, especially the seat.

Have to get going on the veg for dinner, red skin potatoes, carrots and cabbage, plus chop up some onions for the mustard sauce for the corned beef. It's St. Patrick's Day tomorrow and since I am working I am cooking it today. (The dinner that is, not St Patrick's Day!) Little apple turnovers for dessert, store brought.

Sorry to hear about Slightly-Goth's impending redundancy, I was made redundant at the ripe old age of 16! Company went out of business!

Hope all is well with you and yours,
Huggs,
Lynda

Mum doesn't use her rollator all the time - she often comes into town with just a stick, but I think she, too, was very glad of the seat especially, on Saturday.

We don't celebrate St Patrick's Day even though, as an island, we have a number of links to the actual saint - it is basically an American celebration. So nothing in particular planned for dinner tonight.

SGN says she wasn't surprised - in her role she became aware that a number of staff outside their department now had access to 'their' computer programmes; when she asked why she was told they were being trained to use it. When she asked why was that they muttered something about extra back-up in case there was ever a problem with the hardware her. She was not convinced - and rightly so.

I take it they didn't offer her the chance to transfer to Scotland? Why bother, now they get to train a whole new bunch of people, much to easy!

Huggs,
Lynda

I gather they are offering some of them the chance to transfer - but she and her fiancé have just bought a flat here, and he has a job here - so it was not likely that she would want to move - which they will be pretty sure is true of a number of the staff.

Busy indeed! Hope it's not too much of a bureaucratic nightmare to get that referral. And am excited to read your B2MeM story! :)

I really don't know when my story is to be made public - sometime this week though, as I understand it!

Mum's GP is very good, so as long as she is at work this week the referral will be made quickly. But it is such a nuisance - as a nurse specialist I refer directly to a gynaecologists, urologists, and paediatricians - why on earth the eye department can't take direct referrals from people who are more qualified in their specialism than I am in mine I really don't know.

Oh, *slaps head* That's the second weekend gone by and I forgot to register. I will do so. Next weekend. I'll add it to my to-do list, right now.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2014-03-17 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It will be great to see you.

*fingers crossed for your mum*

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2014-03-17 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure it is mendable - as long as they can keep the sight in the other one OK I think she would settle for that.

One day I'll manage my dream to come to your writer-conUK. I've wanted to from the start but I have not shelved the dream yet (or, obviously, achieved it).

*hugs*
Kathleen

I hope things work out for your mother and niece.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2014-03-18 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Mum doesn't, really, expect to get that sight back, so it will not be a big shock to her if that is what the ophthalmologist says. But it is a worry to know why it has gone.

I'm sure you, D-d and your mom had a lovely time together. I soooooooooo hope the blind spot in the middle of your mom's eye is nothing to worry about. At least her left eye is fine. One can do very well with only one eye. I have two friend who do.

The optician was clearly worried about what might be causing the blind spot. Whether this is because she thinks it is something that might be reversible if something is done quickly, or whether she worries that it is something sinister is difficult to know.

But Mum agrees with you, that the sight in her other eye is reasonable and she would cope with it.

I'm keeping all my fingers crossed the optician was worried because she thought it was something reversible.
