Skye Pics 3

As promised - more Skye sky and scenery!

We drove from Broadford to Kylrhea one day - along a tiny mountain road, all twists, turns and gradients. We stopped near the top of a pass where we could pull in, and looked down the way we were headed - towards the second narrowest sea strait between Skye and mainland Scotland. The narrowest point is where they have built the bridge - but Kylrhea to Glenelg is still a ferry route. Quite possibly one of the world's smallest sea-ferries!

Road to Kylerhea

This second picture the view along the strait between Skye and the mainland.

From Kylrhea

As you can tell – the weather was not as sunny that day as it was when I took some of the other pictures – but clouds are interesting too.

Whilst we waited for the tiny ferry I took a few pictures of what I could see around me – and I like these two in particular:

Lobster pots

Driftwood and stones at Kylrhea

And finally the ferry arrived – it is a four-car car-ferry – although my friend tells me that she has been on it when they have squeezed six vehicles on! The ferrymen have a dog that travels backwards and forwards with them all day.

Glenelg Ferry

As we crossed a seal kept an eye on us - but I know from experience with our seals here at home that seals do not photograph well when swimming - all you get is a small dark blob - so I didn't bother!

PS - sorry - forgot to reduce the size on a couple - and I'm too sleepy to do it reliably now - I might adjust them down a bit tomorrow!

Your photos reminded me of that soft grey quality of light that I remember in Scotland, very different from the light over here. Thanks for sharing.

That soft grey light does make for atmospheric photos - although it also regularly makes for rain! That day it varied between sunshine and showers in very typical Scottish fashion.

The sky seems rather ominous in Skye. :-) Very nice pictures, though. Looks like a beautiful place to visit.

It is a very beautiful place - and it does do sky in a big way - sometimes so much sky that it is almost at road level!:~>

Very nice! Nicely composed still lifes, and the first two remind me of the North Shore (of Lake Superior.) Gorgeous.

Thank you. I read a fascinating book during the trip home, about where the Scots went when they left for North America - and like many others they often went for places that looked a bit like home. Although the Highlanders prefered somewhere with more fertile land than they had at home, but with mountains very near at hand. So there are probably McDonalds and McCleods around the North Shore area!

Seals are frustrating to photograph; I want to videotape them hunting salmon at the Fifth Avenue Bridge next month, because still photos are just hopeless.

This set of pics reminds me of my original reason for being obsessed with Skye: Mary Stewart's Wild Fire at Midnight.

Julia, as well as making me want to go to the Gulf Islands and get away from home for a bit

Didn't see a single bonfire though! I read a fascinating book on my way home - 'A Dance Called America' by James Hunter - which discussed what happened to emigrant Scots in North America - including settling the Northern Pacific coast, and I thought of you.

Mountains, valleys and the sea - what more could you want! Lovely.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you - it is a stunning place.

[identity profile] bogwitch.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
I like them big, you get more of a sense of the place. Beautiful photos.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
Good - I will leave them this size just for you. (Which saves me down-sizing them, but it is just for you - honestly!)

PS: Note how beautifully I ignored all possible double entendres in your opening phrase!!

Ooh, it looks cold. Shiver. But that wee little ferry is very entertaining - I wouldn't LIKE to be on it when they'd squeezed six cars on! The water doesn't look appealing at all, unless you have the physique of a seal :)

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't all that cold - but not exactly sunny that day! THe wee ferry was teh cute!

Oh wow, even though I commented on the weather yesterday, I find the grey clouds in these so much more dramatic. Wonderful scenery too. Thanks for sharing :)

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yes - the clouds make dramatic look dramatic-er!!

That's it, I've got to get to Scotland one of these days! These pictures are gorgeous, and the one of the wood and the stones I like best of all.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you - I think I'm going to use that one as my desk-top background for a while.

[identity profile] spikereader.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Lovely pictures. The little tiny ferry looks as though it might topple over into the sea at any moment.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
They turn the bit the cars are on by hand to put it in line with the boat-bit when it is loaded ready to sail, so it becomes broad and low whilst actally crossing the water.

Once again: gorgeous! thank you, thank you.

My pleasure - I will put a few more up tonight.

Ah! Now that looks more like the West Coast of Scotland that I know and love

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2005-08-27 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yep - damp - regularly damp!

Thank you. It is a pretty stunning part of the world.
