D-d's birthday cake

Just before Easter I was looking at a book I have of Easter Crafts and recipes. I commented to S2C and D-d (who just happened to have called around) that sometimes the links between the recipe and the occasion were tenuous and gave them an example.

"I want one! Could you make it for my birthday?" was D-d's immediate response - a sentiment seconded by her father with enthusiasm.

The item in question was a Trinity Cake.

Trinity Cake is so named because it is made up of 3 layers of sponge cake, each one flavoured differently; one vanilla, one coffee and one chocolate. Sandwiched together with buttercream.

In this case with 3 flavours of buttercream to match the 3 flavours of sponge.

Katherines Trinity Cake

The top layer of buttercream was the chocolate one - with rosettes of the coffee stuff, and maltesers for decoration.

This is what it looked like inside - and as a slice;

Katherines Trinity Cake cut
Katherines Trinity Cake slice

So, now you know what Trinity Cake is!

If I'd been feeling very creative I would also have covered the sides in buttercream - but, it was agreed, even without that extra touch it was a very tasty birthday cake.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-07 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It was one reason that D-d and I were considering the manufacture of that chocolate wedding cake quite seriously - because, although larger, it would have taken no more skill to produce than this one did!

It looks delicious. :-)

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-07 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. It was very tasty, with the three different flavours.

Yummy! I love buttercream and your cake has loads of it!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-07 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
D-d and S2C both prefer buttercream to fresh cream... Although I think it would have been rather nice made with fresh, too!

Yum! I think I put on 5lbs just looking at the pictures. What a fabulous cake.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-07 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I get on the scales tomorrow - following Easter Eggs and the chocolate trifle as well as this 5lb will be about right, I fear... But it was worth it taste-wise!

[identity profile] brutti-ma-buoni.livejournal.com 2013-04-07 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks extremely tasty. But I agree with your doubts about the theological significance of the buttercream. :)

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-07 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course it could just be my Protestant upbringing - it maybe that in other traditions the theological implications of buttercream are taught from an early stage..

Such a shame that I can't e-mail cake.

Omigosh. That sounds (and looks) heavenly!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
It really is fairly straight forward - but it did taste very good.

[identity profile] myrhiann.livejournal.com 2013-04-07 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That looks taste sensational!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
It was rather good!

That cake looks and sounds amazing!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
It really is pretty simple to make - just 3 1-egg Victoria sponges and a good deal of buttercream...

[identity profile] estelcontar1.livejournal.com 2013-04-07 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
What a most scrumptious birthday cake. It's making my mouth water.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
It was very tasty, I must admit.

[identity profile] petzipellepingo.livejournal.com 2013-04-07 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
What a delicious looking cake.

That looks seriously yummy!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It was really rather good - and really easy, too. Being a triple decker made it that bit more interesting.

[identity profile] pondhopper.livejournal.com 2013-04-07 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm drooling looking at it and I can almost taste it...it just looks SO WONDERFULLY good!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. It was rather nice - and not really that complicated. Although I'm still not sure that it has any great religious significance!

[identity profile] kortirion.livejournal.com 2013-04-07 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Confound you woman! Now I want cake... I want coffee cake with chocolate... and buttercream... mmmmmmm.... cake....

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry. Perhaps a cupcake sized one would be OK?

That looks incredible! I want you to make my birthday cake, too. *g*

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I fear it probably wouldn't travel very well... which is a pity as I would happily make them for all and sundry!

[identity profile] the-winterwitch.livejournal.com 2013-04-07 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that sounds and looks awesome! I'm not much of a fan of coffee, neither in beverage nor in taste, but that tempts even me! ;o)

Cool icon, by the way. *g*

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. It was nicely balanced by the vanilla and the chocolate - and I made sure that the coffee cake and the coffee buttercream were not quite together.

[identity profile] keiliss.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say the theological significance is that a good buttercream is utterly divine?

That cake is its own food group. Looks delicious!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say the theological significance is that a good buttercream is utterly divine?

Ah - you may have solved the puzzle!

Oh, that looks good. Happy birthday to your D-d.

Thank you. I do enjoy baking.

Happy birthday to d-d! :)

Thank you.

[identity profile] mummy-owl.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh that looks soooo yummy!

Why not a chocolate wedding cake? I made one for my first daughter's wedding and an ice-cream one for the second! ;-)

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Chocolate wedding cakes are fine - but they don't keep, so sadly the missing relatives, and those on the other side of the world, can not get those mysterious silver boxes of cake I remember so well from my childhood!

The reason the chocolate wedding cake was being used as a comparison was that it really was such a simple cake, when you looked at it properly - and the bakers had charged £400 for it! D-d and I concluded that this one was just as good, more interesting due to the different flavours, actually no less complicated - and if we had scaled it up to the size of the wedding cake in question it would have cost under £50 for ingredients, and taken less than 2 hours work, not counting the time it was in the oven...

[identity profile] rs9.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG! I want some! Delicious!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-09 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
I do think it a pity that no-one has invented a way to e-mail cake...

[identity profile] ayinhara.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You are a cake master. That is beautiful and tasty too I bet.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-09 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! It did taste very good, to be honest.

[identity profile] engarian.livejournal.com 2013-04-09 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
OMG - I want to live with you for a while. May I? I don't think I've ever seen something that looked so amazingly good in years and years and years!!!

You'd be welcome. The funny thing is that it was a remarkably simple cake to make - but it did taste very good.

[identity profile] heartofoshun.livejournal.com 2013-04-09 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
That is outrageously gorgeous and looks incredibly delicious.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-09 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. To be honest it wasn't difficult to make - it did taste very good though :)

[identity profile] bojojoti.livejournal.com 2013-04-10 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
That looks fabulous--and some of my favorite flavors, too!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2013-04-10 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a very big hit with D-d and then also her friends that she took it for. And really simple to make - you must pass the idea on to your younger generation who like to spend time in the kitchen! Still not 100% sure about the religious aspects... :)
