Miscellany.

I've not been posting, or even commenting, much. Apart from being distracted by the Paralympics, my left arm has been sore; and I find the angle I need to hold it on to type makes it worse. But I really can't stop myself - apart from being here, I have a couple of short stories demanding to be written and a long one that keeps poking me, too.

The children were back in church today and we spent our time making salt-dough harvest wreaths, and salt-dough fish to celebrate the harvest of the sea. I was feeling a bit jaded before I went to church but it was so good to see them all, and have fun with them, that I felt much more smiley when I came home.

I had an urge to make scones, and so S2C and I sat to a pot of tea and some warm cherry and ginger scones about 3.45 for afternoon tea - very civilised.

And right now I have 2 ovens full of salt-dough drying out at low temperature to be painted next Sunday. It's keeping the house warm on what is a cool autumn day.

There are three or four pics under the cut - not related to the above at all!

When I was at Return of the Ring a couple of weeks ago I bought some jewellery - some steam-punk stuff for myself just because, and some for my sister as a birthday gift - so mine;

004

All handmade from real bits of watch.

Now the pieces for my sister's birthday. These are blue goldstone - and [livejournal.com profile] inzilbeth_liz can you please tell Heather (who made them) that my sister was absolutely thrilled with them.

003

Now a picture of the WW2 dispatch rider's bike that my cousin has restored in memory of his father, who rode one just like it. It is parked in our back garden - which was not looking very tidy, I fear. The wee mat was there in case the bike was incontinent of oil...

008

Finally something that just makes me smile every time I go past it. This is a sea-side garden on the south coast of the island -

006

What fun to have small garden sheds painted as beach huts, rather than one, more boring, one!

Now a question for Tolkienista friends - I read a story not that long ago and can't remember where.

Does this sound familiar to anyone; Éomer/Lothiriel in which Lothiriel is actually Imrahil's illegitimate daughter, of whom he knows nothing, as she has been brought up by her healer mother in Rohan. She follows the Rohirrim to war in her role as a healer. When he realises who she is, Imrahil is more than happy to acknowledge her, but at least one of his sons is certainly not, and is convinced that she is a fraud.

I really ought to be more organised about bookmarking stories!

It sounds wonderful for it to be cool enough to enjoy having the oven on in the house. I am dying to bake and probably have to wait another month or so!

Here is a story with that plot point. Truth is I have not read the entire thing. Only skimmed parts.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
We are definitely cool enough to bake today!

Thanks for the link, but it isn't that one, which has another daughter as well. The one I read had widowed Imrahil having 'found comfort' with the healer, who had some reason of her own to return to Rohan when she realised she was pregnant - there was a feeling that we might find out what that reason was... eventually. But the story was unfinished. To be honest, it was also better written and less 'twee' than that one looked when I skimmed through it the other night thinking it might be the 'lost one'.

Isn't that garden wonderful? The bike gets him into a lot of interesting conversations - one of our neighbours spent ages chatting as his father, too, had been a dispatch rider.

Sadly that isn't quite the right story - but it was really good of Oshun to help.

I know how it feels to need to type carefully due to discomfort. *gentle hugs*

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I have been thinking of you for exactly that reason - it is so frustrating!

[identity profile] ellynn-ithilwen.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The jewelry is beautiful, all of it! :)

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it? The lady who made the jewellery is very talented.

[identity profile] petzipellepingo.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Sending along healing vibes for that arm.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I hurt the shoulder and I tend to hunch it slightly to type on the laptop, which makes it stiffen up and hurt even more.

[identity profile] cairistiona7.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry your arm's been bothering you. May it heal soon! And I'm glad you posted photos of the jewelry--very interesting pieces.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Aren't they all so neat - in different ways.

[identity profile] manoah.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that blue goldstone! So very different and pretty!

The steampunk stuff is fun too. I saw some great stuff at a craft faire a few years back. Way too spendy for me though.

Hope your arm feels better soon.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
My sister was very impressed with the blue goldstone - it looks almost black until the light catches it.

The steampunk stuff was not very expensive - the lady who was selling it made it herself form bits of broken watches and clocks.

[identity profile] brutti-ma-buoni.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The garden made me smile a lot. And the steampunk jewellery is gorgeous. I have some recycled stuff made from ringpulls, but yours is much funkier!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That garden makes me smile every time I drive past it with time to look.

I was really taken with the steampunk jewellery - it was a real 'must buy' thing.

[identity profile] pondhopper.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope your arm feels better soon! That kind of pain can be so daunting. Did you pull a muscle or tendon?

LOVE the motorbike! Old vehicles are a love of mine and also Manolo's.

Very nice jewelry and I especially like what you got for your sister!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I pulled the muscles in my shoulder a couple of months ago - and the way I've been trying to ease it has caused my lower arm to ache, too!

The bike is a conversation opener for him quite often - you can imagine.

And my sister really loved the jewellery, too - I know my audience well...

[identity profile] estelcontar1.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry about your sore arm. It sucks I know. Mine was very, very sore for a couple of weeks, and after three sections of acupuncture it's still not completely healed, though it's almost there.

Your scones are making my mouth water.

What lovely jewellery. I can't make up my mind about which one I like best: the watch bits or the blue goldstone. I love blue goldstone. And that bike is awesome.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think part of the problem with my arm is that I've been holding it oddly to ease the shoulder and so made the lower arm sore too...

The scones are rather nice, I must admit.

My sister had never seen blue goldstone before and she was really impressed with her pieces - I was really happy because it was such a hit.

The best thing about the bike is that it is still very rideable, I think - and it does encourage people to strike up conversations with him!

[identity profile] estelcontar1.livejournal.com 2012-09-10 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I was lucky then because my lower arm did not get sore, but the shoulder and the upper arm gave a lot of trouble.

I would strike a conversation with your cousin if I saw him driving such an awesome bike.

[identity profile] nutmeg3.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
What did you do to your arm? And mmmm, scones. I envy you your cool weather. Enjoy!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I pulled a muscle in my shoulder a couple of months ago and it has taken too long to recover - partly because of how I sleep, I think. Then, because I've been holding the arm oddly to compensate for the sore shoulder, the lower arm developed an ache, too. And I realised that I tend to lift the shoulder a little to enable me to type easily on the laptop - which tends to cause the muscles to tighten up, too.

Current temperature is 16C - about 61F - and going to stay that way for the next few days, with wind and rain too. But at least we've had about 10 days of dry weather with temperatures reaching 19 or 20C.

The bluestone is pretty. I love the seaside garden - I want one!

I hope your arm recovers soon.

The blue goldstone is beautiful - but at first sight looks plain black - my sister was very pleased with it.

Thanks for the good wishes - it is more the nuisance value as it is my dominant arm, and so whenever I forget I pick stuff up with it and then it hurts again, and so on.

Lovely pics! I especially like the jewelry, the blue net one, and the bike. Wish Frank could see the bike - he loved them.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-10 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
He would have loved it, wouldn't he? Richard has even gone so far as to put the correct ID on the tank for it to have been his father's one.

[identity profile] kortirion.livejournal.com 2012-09-09 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Love the sea-side garden and the 'still life' of found objects - most inventive.

And interesting to see your steam-punk jewellery. I've been collecting old watches and metal bits and bobs for several months with the intention of having a go at making some myself. Daughter bought be a 'how to' book for Christmas but as yet... time and procrastination have got the better of me. Come October I'm expecting delivery of a new book on how to steam-punk a costume - not for me sadly, I'd never go anywhere to wear it, but Daughter may find I've steam-punked some of her Goth outfits for her!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-10 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
That garden is great, isn't it?

The steampunk jewellery is very neat - literally in this case, I thought - no proggly bits for me to catch in things! If you steampunk some of your daughter's Goth outfits, do take pictures, I would love to see.

[identity profile] empresspatti.livejournal.com 2012-09-10 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I've been so absent lately - and then I get to LJ and see your post! As always - I love your pictures!

SO HELLO! Hope you arm recovers. I've had great luck with a split keyboard, made it much easier on my hands.

LOVED the jewelry.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-10 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Nice to see you. S2C usually uses a split keyboard - not just at the minute because it is broken - but I use a laptop. Actually the problem is that I do actually sit with it on a laptray - and I scrunch my shoulder up a bit to type.

The lady who makes that jewellery is very talented.

[identity profile] calizen.livejournal.com 2012-09-10 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
How long have you been into steampunk? Just discovered this type of writing myself.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-10 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I have loved the look since the first time a friend on LJ mentioned it - three or four years ago.

I read and enjoyed all [livejournal.com profile] gailcarriger's Parasol Protectorate books, even if there are, occasionally, metaphorical big arrows going 'look - this is a plot point!' in a couple of the earlier ones.

Sorry to hear about your sore arm, but I'm glad it didn't stop the scone making :) great photos - I like the jewellry.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-10 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The shoulder is an ongoing nuisance - but not bad enough to stop me when I have a desperate urge for scones!

The jewellery is lovely, isn't it?

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2012-09-10 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I will be sure to tell Heather. She's decided to go to Oxonmoot after all so we'll be meeting up again very shortly. I actually bought a blue stone myself - to go with my Arwen dress!

Hope the arm is better soon.

[identity profile] estelcontar1.livejournal.com 2012-09-10 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The blue goldstone is going to look perfect with your Arwen dress. I just bought a blue goldstone ring to match my earrings.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-09-10 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad that you treated yourself to something - you were working hard at authoring and deserved a wee treat!
