Sea Pictures, mainly.

This is just a post to show the contrasts we can get in weather, here in the Irish Sea. I took a few pictures when I visited a patient in Derbyhaven last week - in a storm, and a few today, about 4 or 5 miles away at Port Erin, on a calm day.

I'll put them

Derbyhaven's name suggests, rightly, that it is a sheltered cove - and it has not only the natural protection of the curves of the bay, but also a man-made breakwater; which is the structure in the middle here, doing its job - the water is certainly breaking over it! Can you imagine how rough the water would be in the haven if it wasn't for the breakwater?

Derbyhaven, April 25th 2012

And from a little further along, the breakwater again -

Derbyhaven, April 25th 2012, B

Definitely a day to leave your small boat in the bay! It was the sort of day I was imagining in Immigrants, Chapter Seven.

Today - exactly a week later, I was in Port Erin, and sat on a bench above the bay to eat lunch - it was a very different day! This was the view;

Port Erin Bay

Or, if I turned about 90* I could see this;

Port Erin Bay  Bradda Head

The thing on the top is the Milner Tower - it is basically a folly.

And here is a closer view of the yacht in the bay;

Port Erin Bay B

This is just a seat further down the path;

Port Erin Bay footpath to beach

And finally, just because I like it, here are two people strolling along the shore;

Port Erin Bay C

Lunch breaks like that certainly help centre me and ready me to face the afternoon!

That second picture with the slate-grey sea is shiver-worthy. Sheltered cove it may be, but that's not a sea to mess with. Very impressive.

I do love looking-down images like that seat, where you can disentangle the different levels if you try but at first sight are positively dizzying.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I would certainly not have wanted to be out there in any sort of boat at all last week.

I rather like images looking down, too - for the very same reason.

They are all gorgeous but I really love that final one. Many thanks for sharing :)

There is something really peaceful about that couple, isn't there? As if they are the only people for miles around, and have all the time in the world. I like the way they are reflected in the wet sand and it is impossible to see what is sea and what is sand.

Absolutely beautiful!
The Cruel Sea...

Thank you! It's been rather good to have my elves arrive in Alqualondë so that I could write about both peaceful seas and storms!

One day I really must do something in Dol Amroth.

That last shot is really terrific.

How I love the sea!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you - I just liked the look of that empty shore and the two people.

When I did live inland I used to go and visit the sea now and again.

That water looks a great deal like one of the Great Lakes, thanks for sharing.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Your lakes and our sea are so similar in both size and temperament, aren't they? No wonder so many Manx people settled around the Great Lakes.

How lovely. Even the rough water is spectacular in it's own way. That would make for a wonderful lunch break.

I love being able to sit in the sunshine (even if it was not all that warm - about 59-60F) - but I will happily sit in the car and watch stormy seas for hours too, given half a chance.

How truly lovely. I am always amazed by the power of the ocean.

I can happily sit and watch the sea in all its moods - it is one of my great pleasures.

Impressively lovely photos! I really like the second and last images for very different reasons.
I'd like to sit on that bench and just contemplate.
:)

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think those might be my favourites, too.

The bench would be a lovely place to sit - as long as it wasn't pouring with rain...

People are amazingly brave. At least some of them. I look at the awesome power of the sea and am quite happy to be on dry land. Definitely a land lover.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
I love to look at the sea - but I am a wimp about going on it in anything smaller than a 5,000 ton ship!

[identity profile] zanthinegirl.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Those storm photos are such a great illustration of the power of the ocean. I have to admit to really kind of enjoying stormwatching; the water is so interesting. though I'm fondest of it when I can easily get warm and dry!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm absolutely with you on the storm watching - stormy seas are wonderful to watch provided I can keep warm and dry.

[identity profile] myrhiann.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Lovely photos. I could easily sit on that seat and enjoy the view, but only if I were suitably clad. I particularly like the photo of the couple walking on the wet sand. It is hard to tell where sand ends and sea begins. I love the sea, wish I still lived near it. When I lived in Sydney I was close enough to hear the waves breaking on the shore.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
I really like that photo of the two people as well. I do like being able to sit and eat lunch so close to the sea - it is a simple pleasure, but very much a pleasure.

[identity profile] ellynn-ithilwen.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, this is really beautiful! Spectacles the sea can do are very fascinating.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The sea is fascinating because it is ever changing - it makes it very easy to photograph without getting bored.

[identity profile] bojojoti.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
The last one looks like a Biblical miracle--walking on water!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It does, doesn't it? Just the water in the sand reflecting the sunlight - but pretty.

[identity profile] rachel2205.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
You live in a beautiful place! :) I would like to live near the sea some day.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You are getting closer...

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
I can almost smell the air! Wonderful!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
You know we are so used to the sea air that we don't really think of it. But I used to find that, whenever I came home from the UK, I was very sleepy for a couple of days - my Mum reckoned it was the sea air.

I love the changing moods of the sea! Lovely photos.

The sea is a very good subject - almost as good as cats.
