Brief Cat Update.

Thank you so much for all the hugs and good wishes - I'm not sure if I will get to reply to them individually, but thank you all.

Shaka is home, breathing easier, eating a little, and is currently sitting in a cardboard box in the garden where it is misty, but dry, and not cold although we are not having the heat of the UK mainland - here it is currently 17C - so about 63F.

He is on medication, which he is not happy to take, of course, and is certainly not a very well cat, but he is home and seems content.

I must dash back to work....

So glad to hear he's home. Good luck giving him the medication--is this a daily med you'll have to give him for the duration or something to get him back to snuff and then taper off?

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks - daily meds, two tablets - they won't really get him back to very fit, but should at least help with his breathing and give him back something of an appetite. At least he took today's pills all right.

[identity profile] maddeinin.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad he's home, and am sending good thoughts your way re: pilling. *hugs*

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you - at the moment he feels too weak to be bothered fighting over the pills - if they work he'll doubtless start to be more awkward!

[identity profile] nutmeg3.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
This is very good news. And can you get pill pockets over there? They work really well for making a cat (or dog) think a pill is nom, nom, nom, a treat.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Dougalsservant has just offered to post me some as we can buy them for dogs but, oddly, not for cats; but she has some she ordered from the US. Usually I give him medication in a bit of salmon, but today he couldn't be bothered with the salmon, but let me just put them into his mouth and wait until he swallowed!

[identity profile] engarian.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so VERY relieved, Curious. I'm sure Shaka is not out of the woods yet, and may still have downswings, but home is where the heart is and where the cat is beloved. Cats will move mountains to be able to return home. Lots of love to you, your beloved cat, and everyone else in your family.

- Erulisse (one L)

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. He is not very strong, but he is home, and seems happy to be so. We will make as much fuss as he will allow, and take each day as it comes.

[identity profile] dougalsservant.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so relieved to hear the dear boy is home. Give him a furfle from me - in fact give him lots of furfles! Love to all of you, D

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
He is being well fussed - although he is insisting on returning to the box in the yard rather than anywhere soft and comfortable in the house!

Poor Shaka! The trials of an elderly cat are many. :(

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. He is, sadly, quite definitely an elderly cat now.

[identity profile] ayinhara.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
We were away for a few days and missed the earlier post about Shaka. I hope that the medication keeps him comfortable for as long as possible.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
He seems to be breathing better and is pottering about - I think it is as much as we can hope for but he is home at any rate.

[identity profile] zanthinegirl.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Such good news!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. He's on furosamide, and something more veterinary for kidney failure - and he seems content, at any rate.

[identity profile] petzipellepingo.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Sending more good vibes his way.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you - I know you understand what it is like with an elderly, not very well, cat.

[identity profile] ukamikanasi.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww! I hope the little guy feels better soon. Glad he's back home!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I think he's glad to be home.

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm late coming to this so saw your update before the original post. I'm so glad Shaka is doing better. I can well imagine what a stressful night it's been for you all but hopefully he still has a good while with you yet.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
He looks quite frail, but he seems happy to be home - even if he is currently insisting on sleeping in a box outside the back door!

Glad he's home. Hope he's himself again soon.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I think he is going to be an 'old' cat now - but he is home and seems content.

[identity profile] deborahw37.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh thank goodness he's still with you, home and doing better!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you - it is good to have him at home, I'm just hoping now that he'll eat something!

[identity profile] ellynn-ithilwen.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww, I'm so glad he's better. :) How old is he, btw?
Cuddle him for me! :)

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you - he is duly cuddled. He's 16 - so a rather elderly cat - but it means he has been part of the household for a very long time.

[identity profile] clodia-metelli.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm glad he's home. I hope he gets over it fast!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I think he is not going to be the cat he was - but he is home, and being his odd-ball self - preferring to sit in a box in the back yard to indoors, and refusing to eat the special catfood, but almost taking my fingers off when I tried to temp him with a bit of boiled ham!

[identity profile] ningloreth.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That is good news. I'm sure that, now his breathing's easier, he'll be happier at home.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
His breathing seems fine now - he's not dashing around, but then he's been slowing down for a few months - but he seems to be in no distress at all.

There's no place like home.

I'm glad to hear he's somewhat better.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you - he seems quite content although not really wanting to do much more than sit in a box and be stroked.

[identity profile] lilachigh.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
So glad he is making progress.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. He seems to be breathing more easily, and in no pain or distress - and happy to be fussed. I think, right now, it's as good as we can expect.

[identity profile] estelcontar1.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
*Hugs* My dear! I didn't see your post yesterday, and only today heard about Shaka's illness. I can well imagine how bad you all felt. I'm soooooooo glad then that he is back home and feeling a bit better.

I'll be keeping all my fingers crossed he'll keep on taking his tablets, and that they'll do him a world of good.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
He seems quite content - not exactly rushing around - but then he is 16. But he is taking his tablets and so hopefully his breathing will stay easy and he'll get a bit of appetitie back.

[identity profile] slaymesoftly.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Good to hear that he's home and doing fairly well. Here's to his continued recovery.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you - he's pottering about - a bit like an elderly relative that's just got home from hospital, to be honest! But he is home, and he seems quite happy.

[identity profile] janedavitt.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so pleased to hear that ::hugs you::

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-29 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
He seems to be frail but happy - even if he is insisting on staying out in the back yard in a cardboard box!

[identity profile] cbtreks.livejournal.com 2011-09-30 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to hear he's home and I hope the medication helps him.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-30 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
He's up and about this morning - clearly not the cat he used to be, but he seems quite content and breathing without any problems.

[identity profile] perpetua-redux.livejournal.com 2011-09-30 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the update; Shaka has been on my mind.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-30 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you - he's been asleep on the spare bed all night and is out in the sunshine in the garden again, now.

[identity profile] lindahoyland.livejournal.com 2011-09-30 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry I didn't realise Shaka was ill. I hope he soon feels better.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2011-09-30 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. He's been slowly developing kidney problems, as do many elderly cats, but he developed heart failure over the past few days However he does look a bit better again now. he is 16 so I suppose it is not surprising that he is not in the best of health.
