Sunday in Yorkshire - North Yorks Moors Railway.

I think the NYMR deserves a whole post to itself - such a good day out. We got to Pickering only to find that it was difficult to park at the railway, but we found another car park within walking distance, and then had lunch in a little tea-room overlooking the railway station while we waited for the next train.



The up train was a diesel - we didn't take its picture - but here are D-d and S2C in their seats on the train - the carriages are 'preserved' as well as the engines.



The guard came around to check our tickets - he looked exactly as a guard on an old steam train should!



These are simply views taken out of the window, to give you some idea of the countryside -







When we got to Grosmont we discovered that we could go back down behind one of the most famous British steam engines of all time - the Sir Nigel Gresley. As I said to someone in my comments to my post on Sunday, this is a bit like going to take a ferry between islands in New York and finding that today the run is being done by the Queen Mary!

We went out tonight for a meal at a nicely informal place that does Tex-Mex food - I am totally stuffed.

Tomorrow is D-d's actual graduation ceremony - after it we will go out for a rather posh meal - the pictures might take me a little while!!

Goatland station is actually used as Hogsmeade station in the Harry Potter films. Cool, eh?

Oh, those pics bring back memories. We went to York for our honeymoon and had a trip on the North York Moors railway. It doesn't look as if it's changed much in the last 25 years!

I was confusing this with the other Steam railway, that runs from somewhere between Harrowgate and Skipton; West Moors, maybe, or Pennine?

I still haven't gotten the pictures from Miss Perfect's graduation up; I hope the speaker tomorrow is not so subject to "I" strain as the one there!

I think the nearest one to Skipton and Harrogate is the Embsay and Bolton Abbey line - which is shorter than the NYMR. There is also the Keighley and Worth Valley, but it is a bit nearer Leeds, I think, than Harrogate.

I will let you know about the speaker - I'm not even sure yet who it is. It must be a bit repetitive for whoever it is as there are about ten ceremonies over two days!

I don't know how close to authentic it comes, as I've never been to Texas or Mexico, but it is quite likely that it has changed a little in transmission! However, their chimichangas and fajitas tasted good!

The Yorkshire Moors are a lovely area.

I am hoping the weather holds until after graduation - it is pleasant at the moment but the forecast is for rain :~(

I love the trains. My father worked for the Frisco line back in the day.

Tex-Mex? It is a small world. I hope it was good; we eat Tex-Mex on a regular basis!

There are quite a few preserved railways around Britain. In the 1960s a government report suggested shutting a lot of the smaller lines to make the system more cost effective. Then they began to scrap the steam trains.

Bunches of enthusiasts got together and tried to buy the odd engine, the odd mile or two of track before it was destroyed - and slowly they built up these little patches throughout the country.

The NYMR is probably one of the longest - it is an hour from Pickering to Grosmont - and one of the few that connects with the modern system.

I guess your father would have found it interesting - especially as the UK engines and the US locos were pretty different, I think.

We like Tex-Mex - although it is probably not totally authentic - but the chimichangas and the fajitas tasted good to us.

Tex-Mex wasn't 'authentic' in the beginning either; it was an adaptation of Mexican food jazzed up American style. It would be interesting to see the English twist!

I love that cuisine from all around the world can be experienced in any developed country--though, of course, it often has been tweaked for the local tastes. I was quite disillusioned to discover that Chinese fortune cookies were an American invention!

They are rather cool trains - and the moors are a lovely area - it was nice to take a break in Yorkshire, rather than just dashing through.
