The scots usually mean the big melon sized guys! Although they are usually about 8" in diameter here. By the way - I was taught by my Granny that the easiest way to deal with them is to use a big sharp knife and cut them into 1" slices first, then cut the peel off each slice, and cut into about 1" cubes. We usually had them cooked with equal quantities of carrots and mashed them together - it was standard Sunday vegetables in our house when I was a child.
